New Line of NAS Devices Designed for SMBs

PROMISE Technology says its new network-attached storage devices are designed to provide “all-in-one,” entry-level solutions for SMBs.

PROMISE Technology says its new network-attached storage devices are designed to provide “all-in-one,” entry-level solutions for SMBs.

RAID storage solutions provider PROMISE Technology Inc. announced this week a new addition to its SmartStor line of network-attached storage (NAS) devices–the NSx700 Series.

The NSx700 Series includes two units designed to be high-speed iSCSI NAS solutions with up to 210 MB/s throughput. The NSx700 Series is available in either 6-Bay (NS6700) or 4-Bay (NS4700) configuration. Both models are powered by the Intel Atom Processor, and both are equipped with dual Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The SmartStor NSx700 series is equipped with PROMISE’s advanced RAID engine, a legacy component used in nearly all the company’s enterprise-level RAID storage subsystem products. In addition, the NSx700 Series provides such advanced data protection services as RAID 6, bad sector error handling, PDM (Predictive Data Migration), Media Patrol, Redundancy Check, Online RAID migration, and capacity expansion.

“As demand for storage space increases, storage demand from entry-SMBs is also increasing,” says PROMISE Technology CMO Alice Chang. “The SmartStor NSx700 Series provides an all-in-one solution to SMBs to fulfill all storage demands, including file sharing, multi-clients backup, cloud storage backup as well as performing web and ftp services.”

Chang adds, “The NSx700 is providing an initiative management interface, that even if the IT staff in SMBs are not IT professionals, they can easily set up the SmartStor with the web-based interface or GUI utilities on Windows or Mac OSX computers.”

ROUTINE AND CLIENT BACKUP
According to PROMISE, the routine backup from multiple clients has always been a critical issue for SMB users. To help SMBs address this issue, the SmartStor NSx700 Series provides several options for SMB users to back up their computers and servers.

SmartStor NSx700 supports Amazon’s S3 Web Storage service, providing users with the ability to setup their Amazon S3 accounts on NSx700, and perform scheduling backup from NSx700 to Amazon S3 space. Additionally, users can install a second unit of NSx700 at a remote site such as a RSYNC server, and use the NAS to NAS remote backup for disaster backup and recovery.

For client backup, PROMISE also provides several ways to perform backups from Windows or Mac OSX clients to the NSx700. These solutions employ PROMISE’s SmartSYNC, Mac OS X’s Time Machine or third-party backup utilities from Acronis or Symantec. SmartStor NSx700 comes bundled with the Acronis Backup & Recovery software, providing the ability to perform the backup from Windows based computers or servers.

“Backup and recovery has always been a major concern for SMB users,” says Acronis APAC president Bill Taylor. “Acronis Backup & Recovery and SmartStor NSx700 combined will allow SMB users to ease their backup and recovery concerns significantly.”†

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
The SmartStor NSx700 Series is equipped with an 80 PLUS certified power adapter. It is MAID 2.0 compliant, which enables the hard drives to adjust the spinning speed or spin down when the system is not busy or idle to reduce power consumption.

Specifications of the SmartStor NSx700 series include:

  • Intel Atom D525 Dual-Core 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 2 TB of HDD support
  • Dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet Ports
  • 5 x USB 2.0 Host Ports
  • PROMISE RAID Inside
