Bitdefender Launches MSP-Oriented MDR Foundations Service

The new offering combines threat monitoring, detection, response, and hunting in a subscription-priced package priced appropriately for channel pros and SMBs with limited resources.

Bitdefender has shipped a managed detection and response (MDR) service tailored to MSP business models.

The security vendor previewed the new offering, called MDR Foundations, in a conversation with ChannelPro two months ago. It provides a combination of threat monitoring, detection, response, and hunting in a subscription-priced package priced appropriately for channel pros and SMBs with limited resources. Bitdefender designed the service in direct response to feedback from MSPs eager to align what they pay for outsourced security support with what they charge clients for security services.

“Cybercriminals and advanced cyber-attacks are no longer confined to large organizations, as they were in the past. Today, businesses of all sizes are at risk of data theft, espionage, and crippling ransomware attacks. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, organizations with smaller budgets and smaller security teams are finding that protecting themselves and their end customers is increasingly challenging,” said Daniel Clayton, vice president of global security operations and services at Bitdefender, in a media statement. “MDR Foundations is a big step forward in innovating for this underserved market to even the playing field with a powerful ‘always-on’ detect and response service that combines award-winning technology with elite security experts that scales on-demand. Our newest MDR offering reflects our deep commitment to make every business more cyber resilient.”

MDR Foundations subscribers receive 24×7 threat monitoring, detection, and response via a Bitdefender security operations center in San Antonio, as well as assistance from analysts with alert prioritization, threat analysis, and recommended mitigations, and risk-based treat hunting services.

Information about alerts, managed endpoints, and recommended actions to contain or eliminate threats are available on a centralized dashboard. According to Bitdefender, most users complete the heavily automated post-purchase onboarding process in less than a day.

Powered by Bitdefender’s GravityZone Business Security Enterprise platform, the service differs from most MDR solutions, the company says, by layering extended detection and response (XDR) capabilities that look beyond the endpoint on top of managed anti-virus or managed EDR alone.

“MDR Foundations addresses critical gaps in security coverage by delivering managed threat detection and remediation that is affordable, easy to implement, and scales based on the business needs,” said Ryan Walsh, chief operating officer at cloud distributor Pax8, in prepared remarks. “The solution levels the playing field for MSPs and their customers by offering access to top cybersecurity talent without needing a large budget. Bitdefender gives our clients a powerful solution that combines leading-edge technology with some of the brightest minds in security adept at hunting cyberattacks and stopping them at each stage.”

Bitdefender and Pax8 have been alliance partners since 2020.

MDR Foundations is now one of three MDR offerings from Bitdefender, along with its MDR Premium and MDR Enterprise plans. MDR Premium comes with everything in MDR Foundations plus a dedicated security account manager, enhanced threat hunting, and tailored threat modeling. MDR Enterprise adds brand and IP protection, dark web monitoring, and prioritized threat monitoring.

The global market for MDR services will climb at 20.2% CAGR through 2025 to $2.15 billion, according to Gartner.
