For Avast Business After Barracuda Deal, It’s All Security All the Time

According to General Manager Kevin Chapman (pictured), selling its RMM solution positions Avast Business to focus 100 percent of its attention on security—including new solutions coming shortly—and forge integration pacts with leading RMM vendors.

Who came out ahead from last week’s deal between Avast Business and Barracuda Networks? Everyone, according to Avast Business General Manager Kevin Chapman.

“[This] was a win-win for everybody, including our partners and customers,” said Chapman in an interview today with ChannelPro.

Under terms of the agreement disclosed last Friday, Barracuda both purchased Avast’s Managed Workplace RMM solution and agreed to resell Avast’s commercial endpoint security solutions to its SMB customers for the next three years.

According to Chapman, the top resulting benefits for Avast—and by extension other stakeholders in its ecosystem—will be more time and money to invest in security solutions, and more integration between those solutions and the tools MSPs rely on to run their business.

Avast officially launched the Avast Business unit in September 2017, some 14 months after buying AVG Technologies for $1.3 billion. Principally a security company, AVG had become a managed services player as well back in 2013 when it bought Level Platforms, and with it Managed Workplace.

In several conversations with ChannelPro after buying AVG, Avast executives suggested that combining endpoint protection solutions and a platform for managing them under one roof differentiated the company from rivals in both the security and RMM segments. Now, however, Chapman looks forward to investing 100 percent of Avast’s budget and bandwidth in the market it knows best.

“We see the security part of our portfolio as our core,” he says. “Managed Workplace was important to us, but it wasn’t really part of that core.”

Barracuda, by contrast, views RMM software as an essential foundation for larger ambitions in managed services. “They see the RMM marketplace as strategic to them and core to them,” Chapman says. “I think that Managed Workplace will continue to get the development in the future that it deserves.”

For fans of both Managed Workplace and the Avast Business security portfolio, he continues, the end result of the Barracuda deal is two companies investing in those products instead of one, with no change to their integration. “Barracuda will continue with that,” Chapman says. “[We’ll] continue to be very much part of Managed Workplace in the future, but it’ll be part of Barracuda’s portfolio, not ours.”

At the same time, he continues, MSPs who like Avast Business’s security offerings but don’t use Managed Workplace will soon have additional RMM options to choose from.

“When you have an RMM solution yourself, you restrict yourself to the kind of partnerships that you can go after,” Chapman says. “We very much want to build some other partnerships with other RMM players and PSA players. Now the door can open to that, and we will look to seek those kind of partnerships in the future.”

Each time it forges such a pact, moreover, Avast will gain not just an integration partner but a co-marketing ally as well. As the latest Avast Business reseller, Barracuda is the first such collaborator. “They’re going to take Managed Workplace to the considerable channel base and MSP base that they have and look to utilize the product in their other existing customers, and in so doing will take our endpoint protection with it as well,” Chapman says.

The roughly two and a half years since Avast and AVG joined forces have been busy ones, according to Chapman. “We’ve been doing a lot of work to integrate our security offerings, bringing really the best of the best technology together in one solution,” he says, adding that the company is “a good way through” that process.

It’s also weeks away from introducing new security offerings that expand beyond its base in anti-virus. “We are looking to bring to market around RSA time and further on in the months ahead some new layered security solutions for SMBs and our channel partners to bring a fuller solution around security to SMBs,” says Chapman, alluding to this year’s RSA security conference, which takes place the week of March 4th. “We want to bring them an easy to manage, easily deployable solution that goes beyond just the endpoint.”

Chapman declined to provide further specifics except to say that the new systems will fill a gap in the market for security software offering enterprise-grade protection with less complexity at a lower cost.
