ADTRAN Announces SD-WAN Solution

The cloud-based system is equipped to make automatic, application-specific adjustments for business critical and performance-sensitive workloads.

ADTRAN has introduced a cloud-based SD-WAN solution for SMBs and distributed enterprises.

The new platform includes a range of features designed to maintain outbound and inbound quality of service (QoS) and uninterrupted connectivity. Real-time traffic inspection, for example, allows the system to make automatic, application-specific adjustments for business critical and performance-sensitive workloads. Unlike older SD-WAN solutions, ADTRAN says, users can leverage that functionality without manually defining policies, which makes adding new cloud workloads easier.

Manageability features in the new offering include end-to-end visibility along the entire network path into each connection from any location to ADTRAN gateways at any other location.

An entirely cloud-based system that doesn’t rely on edge computing hardware or locally-installed firewalls, ADTRAN’s SD-WAN platform supports active-active WAN links, inbound QoS, single IP failover. The system utilizes multiple gateways throughout the continental U.S. with upstream feeds, as well as redundant backbone links between gateways. Each customer receives dual gateway connections for failover protection.

Service providers who operate data centers can optionally re-deploy the system from ADTRAN’s cloud to their own facilities.

“ADTRAN’s software expertise and long history partnering with service providers to serve SMBs and distributed enterprises enables us to take networking and connectivity far beyond the limitations of legacy hardware-based solutions,” said ADTRAN Director of Software Products and Solutions Chris Thompson in a press statement. “By enabling businesses to realize the benefits of cloud networking while maintaining their existing voice and security services, we’re empowering service providers to quickly expand and grow their SD-WAN footprint. Businesses can now make the move to a cloud-based service offering with less cost, risk and disruption.”

Global SD-WAN outlays will grow at a 30.8% CAGR through 2023 to $5.25 billion, according to IDC. Those numbers have vendors ranging from Barracuda Networks and Dell to Pax8 and Zyxel rolling out SD-WAN offerings in growing volumes.

ADTRAN last made product news in August with the release of a new switch family for VoIP, wireless access, and video surveillance solutions and a turnkey mesh Wi-Fi solution for home and small business users.
