While improved security and optional modules will increase the price, Dwyer-Wirth believes the improvements are worth the cost. "The extras save a lot of time and make a difference in productivity and workflow automation," she adds. "One common app is scanning and sharing to a SharePoint document repository and automatically notifying those with the rights to view them."

Beaver recommends that IT integrators and MSPs use security improvements to introduce their clients to smart printers. "There are plenty of opportunities in terms of licensing, implementation, and security monitoring of smart printers, especially for those already in the managed security services space."

The other avenue for channel partners is designing the automation and document workflow processes, says Dwyer-Wirth. "Clients usually get the management and simple workflow projects pretty quickly." Advanced workflows, she adds, require consulting time, which often involves bringing in vendor experts to help create a careful design and configuration.

"If you sell a major printer line, they probably have smart printer options," she says. "Even small printers will support mobile print and scan from a smartphone," which might be what your clients need to step up to smarter printing.
