Five-Bay, Scalable DiskStation Is Faster and Greener than Previous Models

Synology America Corp. rolls out DS1010 for growing SMBs anticipating future storage needs.

Synology America Corp., maker of network-attached storage (NAS), has launched the DiskStation DS1010, a five-bay storage solution designed for SMBs with growing storage needs.

In a press release to EH Publishing, Synology explained that the new DiskStation DS1010 boasts write speeds that are “250 percent faster than its predecessor, the DS509).

The DS1010 comes with DSM open firmware, can expand up to 10 bays, and is designed for companies that “want an affordable alternative to a PC file server” to centralize data backups, protect critical assets, and share files remotely, according to Synology.

Synology America Corp. president Cheen Liao says the DS1010 serves an average of 116 MB/second, reading speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment (103 MB/second writing) “The Web server responsiveness rate is remarkable, taking only 30.81 seconds to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests”, he adds.

Synology is hoping that its DiskStation DS1010 simplifies and lowers the costs of deploying a complete backup and file sharing solution. “One Synology DiskStation can take the place of multiple other devices,” says the Synology press release. “The DS1010 can cost-effectively replace PC file servers or other storage devices on the network and smoothly integrate into existing cross-platform environments.”

The DS1010 is scalable. It can expand its storage capacity horizontally, from five bays to 10 bays, and using RAID 1, 5, or 6 volume types, disks can be migrated to larger-sized disks without loss of data. Whether adding additional disks, or migrating to larger sized disks, the DS1010 with its companion DS510, provide a total storage capacity of 20 TB.

“We recognize that many businesses have the difficult task of anticipating and managing their increasing storage needs while dealing with very limited budgets,” says Douglas Self, product specialist at Synology America. “The DiskStation DS1010 addresses these needs while packing in a huge set of business-critical features and the flexibility of purchasing five bays now, knowing that scaling to 10 bays is easy and affordable in the future with the DX510.†

Among the features of the DS1010 are:

  • Cross-platform data sharing
  • RAID and auto-notification
  • Windows ADS support
  • Network and remote backup (including Apple Time Machine support)
  • File sharing and encrypted FTP
  • Mail and Web server
  • DLNA media server and photo sharing
  • iSCSI target support
  • Surveillance Station with support for up to 20 IP cameras on the network
  • Web-based interface with Mobile phone and two iPhone/iPod applications.

It seems the DS1010 was designed with energy consumption in mind. Compared with its average PC counterparts, Synology DiskStations consume only 68 watts of power under normal operating conditions. They also support Wake-on-LAN and hibernate disks when not in use.

The DS1010 has hot-swappable drives, is powered by the Intel Atom Dual-Core processor D510. It also sports two 1 G LAN ports, four USB ports, and 1 GB DDRII RAM. With an optional RAM module, the RAM capacity can be scaled up to 2 GB or 3 GB.

The DiskStation DS1010 is available in both diskless and pre-installed configurations. It comes with a 3-year product warranty.

The diskless model and the DiskStation DS1010 5100 (5x1TB HDD) pre-installed are now shipping in the U.S. The DX510 Expansion Enclosure will be shipping in U.S. sometime in March 2010.
