Eaton Launches High-Efficiency UPS Models Aimed at Small to Midsize Data Centers

The new devices are backed by expanded sales and support resources for Eaton’s channel partners.

[Note: This story has been altered from its original version based on expanded information provided by Eaton.]

Eaton Corp. has launched new models of its Power Xpert 9395 uninterruptible power system targeted at small to midsize data centers, as well as expanded sales and support resources aimed at helping its channel partners sell those products more effectively.

The new systems, which will reach market in roughly four weeks, extend the family of high-efficiency Power Xpert 9395 UPSs that†Eaton’s Raleigh, N.C.-based power quality division rolled out†last August†down into the 200 to 600 kilowatt range.†Like its predecessors, the new units introduced today are designed to be up to 99 percent energy efficient across most power loads, and 95 percent or more efficient when loaded as little as 15 percent. The new systems also emit 33 percent less heat than earlier entry-level generations of the†Power Xpert 9395 line, Eaton says, further lowering electricity bills by lightening data center cooling burdens.

“What this is allowing us to do is to give our channel partners a really robust solution for delivering highly efficient power solutions for their customers,” says Eaton product line manager John Collins.

In addition to being highly efficient, the UPSs introduced today provide greater power density as well, delivering up to 20 percent more kilowatts than earlier 200 to 600 killowatt Power Xpert 9395 models in the same footprint. According to Collins, the combined energy and floor space savings the new devices make possible result in decreased TCO and increased marketability.

“It makes it easier for the channel partner to sell the solutions,” he says.

The new systems also come with built-in redundancy enhancements designed to boost availability. “If a component inside were to fail it doesn’t interrupt the operation of the UPS,” Collins says.

Most significant from a channel perspective, however, is the greatly increased emphasis Eaton is placing on through-partner sales of the new systems. Traditionally, Eaton’s own sales force has handled most purchases involving UPS products in the 200 to 600 kilowatt range itself. Going forward, the company plans to lean far more heavily on its channel to close such deals.†The new sales and support offerings that Eaton introduced today, which include†training classes, marketing collateral, and access to both call center services and technical assistance from field-based engineers with UPS expertise, are designed to equip Eaton partners for success in that new role.

“We’re trying to be more supportive than just throwing a product at them and saying have at it,” Collins states. Target markets for the new UPS models, he continues,†include companies building edge or regional data centers, updating existing facilities with aging equipment, or simply looking for ways to lower their power bills.

Eaton, which views the new UPSs announced today as a promising cross-sale opportunity for its PredictPulse remote monitoring service, is temporarily giving that offering to buyers of its latest Power Xpert 9395 models at no cost.

“Customers will get that for the first year for free, and then afterwards they can pay for it on a subscription basis,” says Collins, who adds that Eaton plans to begin sharing a portion of its PredictPulse revenue with partners sometime later this year, and potentially by July. At present, the company keeps all of the money it collects from that service for itself.

“We’re in the middle of still having some focus groups on that,” Collins reports.

Today’s product launch comes amid a sustained push by Eaton into the mid-market data center space and an increased focus on power-related software and services.
