OCZ Announces Larger-Scale Production of Z-Drive R2

Maker of memory and flash-based storage OCZ Technology Group has announced plans to mass produce its Z-Drive R2 solid state drive (SSD). 
The second rendition of the original Z-Drive family, the R2 features increased performance and design flexibility compared to predecessor models. These enhancements are owed in large part to the implementation of a series of optimized NAND modules.
Addressing the emerging performance demands of storage area networks (SANs), workstations, and servers, the Z-Drive R2 delivers transfer rates up to 1.4 GB per second.
“Our fourth generation PCIe SSD, the Z-Drive R2, tackles the performance challenges facing IT professionals head-on,” says OCZ Technology Group CEO Ryan Petersen. , CEO of the OCZ Technology Group.
Peterson says the Z-Drive R2 is “the only bootable and field-serviceable PCIe SSD option on the market today.” He adds, “Due to an innovative interchangeable module design, it enables low-cost field upgradability and capacity increases giving storage architects unprecedented flexibility.”
With eight PCI-E lanes and an eight-way RAID 0 configuration, the R2 delivers performance for companies limited by HDD technology. Moreover, the R2’s use of interchangeable modules in place of permanent, surface-mounted NAND is designed to make the Z-Drive field-serviceable and field-upgradeable.
OCZ Technology is promoting the Z-Drive R2 as a being suitable for “a broad range of applications,” from virtualization to caching to storage.
In a press release to EH Publishing, OCZ Technology states, “The Z-Drive R2 can also provide cost savings when considering the total cost of ownership versus complex and hard to maintain HDD infrastructures.”
The R2 ranges in capacities from 256 GB to 2 TB. In addition, OCZ offers customization options for OEM clients that may require tailored hardware or firmware solutions.
