Wasp Intros New 2D Barcode Scanner
Doing double-duty, the low-cost WD14500 scanner works with 1D and 2D barcodes. According to Wasp, it’s also fast, accurate, and now accessible to SMBs.
Wasp Barcode Technologies released its latest this week.
The WDI4500 2D barcode scanner from Wasp Barcode Technologies works with 1D barcodes (such as UPC/EAN, Code 128 and Code 39) and 2D barcodes (such as QR Code, Maxicode, and PDF417). According to the company, it also “unlocks a multitude of powerful, data-driven applications for healthcare, manufacturing, retail, shipping, military, and more.”
Most SMBs are familiar with the standard 1D (“one-dimensional” or “linear”) barcodes found on a wide range of retail products. In 1D barcodes, all data is encoded in a series of vertical black and white bars and spaces. In contrast, 2D barcodes have data encoded both vertically and horizontally, carrying significantly more information in a smaller size.
Typically, 2D scanner technology acts much like a camera, taking a “picture” of a 2D barcode and reading it. According to Wasp, the WDI4500 uses patented LED imaging capabilities instead. An optimized processor quickly scans and inputs barcodes.
The WDI4500 can also read 1D and 2D barcodes displayed on mobile phones and computer monitors, ideal for retailers that want to send customers electronic coupons and promotions.
Wasp general manager Tom O’Shea says the WDI4500 2D makes 2D barcoding accessible to SMBs. “In the past,” he says, “2D barcode scanners were either too expensive or too slow for most small businesses. We’ve solved these problems with the WDI4500, which offers the same speed and accuracy the market has become accustomed to in 1D laser barcode scanners you might find in a grocery store.”
The WDI4500 2D sells for $379. It is available immediately.
The scanner works from up to 15 inches away for 2D barcodes and 25 inches away for 1D barcodes. Optional features include a stand and extended protection warranty.
