HPE Unveils Data Protection and Analytics Solutions for GreenLake Private Cloud

The new services were announced alongside an edge-to-cloud adoption framework offering methodologies and automation tools for adopting hybrid cloud architectures more swiftly and easily.

Hewlett-Packard Enterprise has introduced new data protection and unified analytics services for its GreenLake private cloud platform, plus an edge-to-cloud framework designed to accelerate hybrid cloud adoption.

“What we’re trying to do is provide customers with unmatched capabilities to power their digital transformation, modernization, and data monetization efforts for all their apps and data, no matter where they live, in their data center, in the colo, or at the edge,” says Keith White, senior vice president and general manager for the GreenLake Cloud Services Commercial Business at HPE.

The data protection solution, called HPE GreenLake for data protection, combines continuous disaster recovery services from Zerto with the HPE Backup and Recovery Service. HPE acquired Zerto for $374 million in July.

“You could fire up your entire estate in a secondary site and roll back to a given checkpoint in a number of minutes,” says Tom Black, senior vice president and general manager of HPE Storage.

Included in the new solution as well is a service called HPE Backup and Recovery Service for VMware. Delivered through a SaaS console and equipped with policy-based orchestration and automation tools, the service lets VMware users backup online and on-premises virtual machines without managing media servers, appliances, or targets. That emphasis on ease of operation was informed by input collected during customer interviews.

“One of the things that we found out was that despite a lot of consolidation in backup, there is still a lot of complexity in there,” says Omer Asad, senior vice president and general manager of cloud data services for HPE Storage. “Customers still have to install and manage backup targets.”

To help organizations optimize their HPE GreenLake for data protection environments, the vendor has also introduced a service called HPE InfoSight App Insights that monitors and fine-tunes application workloads, and another called HPE CloudPhysics that draws on 200 trillion data samples from 3 million virtual machines and more than 4,500 assessments to help users simulate cloud migrations and find the right workload placement and infrastructure sizing.

The analytics solutions HPE unveiled today are both aimed at organizations with robust business intelligence needs that store data both onsite and in the cloud.

“They’re making lot of decisions today and they have data spread out all over the place,” White says. “For many of our customers, the data actually sits outside of the public cloud today for many reasons,” including data latency concerns and often steep egress charges from public cloud vendors.

HPE Ezmeral Unified Analytics eases that problem by providing what HPE claims is the industry’s first unified hybrid analytics and data lakehouse platform.

“Enterprises can forgo complex data migrations, app rewrites, and lock-ins of proprietary solutions yet provide all of their analytics and data science teams with a simple and productive cloud native experience,” White says.

According to the HPE, the new service is up to 35% more cost-efficient than the public cloud for data-intensive, long running analytics jobs.

The second new analytics service, HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric Object Store, lets businesses combine S3-native object store, files, streams, and databases in a single scalable data platform that spans from edge to cloud.

Together, both new solutions represent rich potential revenue sources for channel pros, according to White. “Helping our customers modernize and make the most out of their data, organize it, unify it, rationalize it against all the locations, and then analyze it really represents a really large opportunity,” he says.

IDC expects the big data and analytics software market to be worth $110 billion worldwide by 2023.

HPE Ezmeral Unified Analytics is slated to ship in November. HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric Object Store is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2022.

The HPE Edge-to-Cloud Adoption Framework, which is available now, is a set of methodologies and automation tools for embracing hybrid cloud architectures. Designed to accelerate the design and implementation process, it offers assistance and guidance in eight areas: strategy and governance, people, operations, innovation, applications, DevOps, data, and security.

“Now more than ever, companies need to adopt a more modern operating model to take advantage of cloud capabilities at the edge, data centers, cloud, and colos,” says Alexia Clements, vice president of worldwide go-to-market for HPE’s GreenLake Cloud Services Commercial Business. “Through our adoption framework, we help clients accelerate their business outcomes, de-risk their transformation, and optimize their cloud operating model.”

According to White, HPE had over $5.2 billion worth of total contracts on GreenLake as of its most recent quarter Service orders climbed 46% year over year in that quarter as well and the solution’s annualized revenue run rate grew 33% year over year.

MSPs, White adds, are helping extend GreenLake, which is still primarily an enterprise offering, into the SMB market. “We have a pretty dynamic and significant ecosystem that is helping our smaller customers,” White says.

HPE has been gradually adding GreenLake options for mid-market buyers and larger SMBs in recent years through programs like GreenLake Swift, which offers standardized configurations through distributors, and Cloud28+, a community of cloud service providers that currently has more than 1,300 members in over 100 countries.
