Additional, unspecified products are under construction internally. “We have a number of teams working on software solutions in the security space,” Weller says, adding that those products and any future acquisitions will revolve around the two areas Datto has focused on to date, RMM-based security and SaaS protection.

“The more complete we can make those stacks, the easier it is for MSPs to monitor, manage, protect, detect, respond—all those stages of the NIST framework that are all very important to MSPs—and the more integrated that is, the better,” he says. 

The end result of its investments, according to Weller, will ultimately be an extensive but not comprehensive security portfolio. “I think we will build a complete or substantial technology stack in security for sure,” he says. “I don’t think we’ll ever be 100% of everything to everybody.” In crowded, mature markets like antivirus and firewalls, for example, Datto is likely to continue relying on integration with third-party providers rather than build products of its own.

“Datto’s always had open ecosystem roots,” Weller says.

Leading Datto competitors have been executing strategic plans for security in recent years too. ConnectWise, for example, has assembled a sprawling family of security offerings, partly by purchasing companies like Continuum, Perch Security, and StratoZen. Kaseya’s lengthy list of security-related acquisitions includes ID Agent, Graphus, and RocketCyber, while N-able has bought Passportal, Protected Networks, and SpamExperts, among others, and forged integration alliances with DNSFilter, SentinelOne, and Microsoft.
