ICYMI: Our Channel News Roundup for the Week of September 6th

Home security tools from Palo Alto, Kaspersky, and iDrive, a slender new laptop from Samsung, and a cat definitely NOT suited to apartment living are just a few of the stories we’re now at long last bringing your way.

Not trying to cause trouble here, but today (September 10th) is the exact midpoint of hurricane season. We’ve already seen more named storms in the Atlantic so far this month—13—than in all but four other years. Predictions are for more storms than usual the rest of this year, so keep these fresh newstips high and dry, please.

HP Engage One EssentialBig names, big news. Google revved up G Suite, er, Google Workspace to better bridge “”hybrid work gaps“” experienced by the mix of remote, on-premises, and mobile workers needing access to Spaces, the collaboration linchpin undergirding all of the suite’s other apps. And more ways to do video meetings, hooray.

HP added a new model to the Engage family. Hello to the HP Engage One Essential (pictured), a fanless, sealed all-in-one designed to block out the mess at messy retail sites like bars and restaurants. Celeron or Pentium processor connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi 5.

Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) Anywhere has a name that really means what it says, since you can run it on the cloud or on-premises using VMware vSphere. Now generally available.

Okyo GardeSecurity news. Just off the launch pad: Trend Micro Service One, an upgrade of its managed services to emphasize enterprise threat management, with optional premium support and an early warning service.

Looking for enterprise-grade security for work-from-home employees and small businesses. Check out Okyo Garde (pictured) from the enterprise edge folks at Palo Alto.

All those smart home devices need protection, and perhaps the new Kaspersky Smart Home Security will help telecom operators offer some security help. Runs on home routers and you control it via smartphone.

iDrive has a new option for those of you supporting RDP-based Windows computers and servers: Remote Desktop, which aims to provide fast, secure access to such systems from any PC, Mac, Android or iOS device.

OpenText integrated the N-central RMM platform from N-able into its Webroot Business Endpoint Protection platform. Gives MSPs access to Webroot’s layered security ecosystem.

Losing your credentials never ends well. Hence the new Attivo Networks Endpoint Detection Net Suite with “”ThreatStrike”” functionality that hides real credentials from attackers.

There’s lots of parts and pieces to Microsoft 365, but Hornetsecurity’s 365 Total Protection Enterprise Backup seeks to secure most of them.

One Identity became a technology partner with ServiceNow by adding its Identity Manager into the ServiceNow Partner Program. Check it out in the ServiceNow Store.

Small businesses that need more reliable digital connections can now get the new Managed DNS for Small Business from NS1 for, get this, free.

FireMon acquired DisruptOps to add its monitoring and risk response tools to its network security policy management program.

Samsung Galaxy Book Pro for businessOther product news. The new Samsung Galaxy Book Pro for business (pictured), which is upgradeable to Windows 11 Pro, comes in 13.3- and 15.6-inch versions that are both less than half an inch thin and feature a bright AMOLED display, Intel 11th Gen Core processors, and an exterior made from aerospace-grade aluminum.

Here’s a big basket full of new high-performance single-processor systems from Supermicro. The processors in question are the new Intel Xeon E-2300 and 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Form factors include multi-node servers, rackmount servers, and workstations.

It’s football season now, and that video wall you’ve always wanted is simpler to manage than ever with the new VuWall TRx version 3.1. Easier video wall stitching, higher frame rate for smoother rendering, and a redesigned user interface all make for a video wall upgrade for businesses as well.

When you miss that big boss in your game, you can’t blame the new Razer Basilisk V3 wired gaming mouse with 10+1 programmable buttons, an intelligent scroll wheel, and Razer Chroma RGB.

Lior ToremNon-product vendor news. The remote-first IT management folks at Atera added Lior Torem (pictured) as chief financial officer and Oren Elimelech as chief information security officer.

New faces abound at IGEL, too. If you see a stranger in the halls, it might be Christiane Ohlgart, CFO, or Kris Hamner, chief people officer.

Identity and access management player BIO-key started a Master Agent Referral Partner Program with Intelisys to offer the BIO-key IAM tools through its Channel Alliance Partner program.

This week’s stats ticker:

The new HP Wolf Security Rebellions & Rejections report found tension between IT teams and work-from-home employees. Cause? IT teams have been forced to compromise security to keep work flowing, even in the midst of rising threats. Worse, when they push to increase the security profile of remote workers, they’re rejected. 76% of IT teams feel security took a back seat to continuity during the pandemic, and 91% felt pressure to compromise security. On the other team, 48% of younger office workers (18-24) viewed security as a hinderance. The same percentage of all office workers agreed that security measures meant a lot of wasted time, but 64% of the 18-24 group felt that way. Over half of the young group worried more about meeting deadlines than protecting against a data breach. 39% weren’t sure what the security policies were, or even if there were any. 83% of IT teams are just waiting for the “”ticking time bomb”” of a corporate network breach. Not surprisingly, 80% said IT security was becoming a “”thankless task”” because nobody listens to them.

Pet ProblemsPet fails. Maybe we can’t blame the pets, or even call these pets. One landlord in Auburn, Maine, had to call for animal rescue when he found a tenant moved out and left behind 19 tarantulas (four of them dead) and one python. Are those pets? Worse, all the animals are illegal in Maine. The 15 surviving tarantulas and the python will be relocated.

One the other hand, cats have been great pets forever, right? Sure, but an 80-pound cougar is not your typical house cat. One was found in an apartment in, of all places, New York City. The 11-month-old female was turned over to authorities by its owner. Guess they got tired of cleaning that litter box.
