Tandberg Data Updates Its RDX Utility

The RDX utility and firmware updates are designed to provide better integration with the latest versions of Microsoft Windows.

Data storage and protection innovator Tandberg Data has updated its RDX Utility and associated firmware. The latest version includes a new RDX Windows Backup mode and compatibility with newer versions of Windows.†

Immediately available, the updated RDX utility and firmware is designed to provide better integration with Microsoft Windows, enabling users of Tandberg Data RDX QuikStor to leverage the benefits of the integrated Windows Backup application. With the new mode, Windows sees the RDX as a valid disk target, without the need for a third-party backup application.

Tandberg Data RDX USB 3.0 can be used for scheduled system backups, including bare metal disaster recovery as well as a deduplication volume in Server 2012.

“DAT support has not been available with the Windows Backup utility since the release of Windows 2008,” says Hugo Bergmann, Tandberg Data’s RDX product manager. “Now all DDS/DAT customers can upgrade to the later versions of Windows and take advantage of the inherent benefits of Tandberg Data’s RDX removable disk technology with built-in Windows Backup.”

According to Tandberg Data, the advantages of RDX vs. DDS/DAT include:

  • Higher capacity and flexible media.
  • Higher write/read performance.
  • Minimal user-generated media handling problems.
  • Environmental tolerance to dust, temperature, humidity and operational vibrations.
  • Long media usage (5000x RDX usage compared to 99x DDS/DAT usage).
  • No media wear.
  • No drive cleaning.
  • Non-operational shock and media drop resistance.
  • Future-proof technology with extensive product roadmap.

Tandberg Data RDX USB 3.0 systems can seamlessly integrate into servers with USB 2.0 docks and DAT72/160/320 drives, even using the same cables and RDX dock. RDX cartridges can be rotated, just like tape, to back up and store data in off-site, secure locations.

RDX Technology

RDX technology combines tape storage disk storage. RDX cartridges are available in hard drive and solid-state disk drive capacities, ranging from 64 GB to 1.5 TB. All RDX cartridges are removable for off-site storage, disaster recovery, and archival applications. With SuperSpeed USB 3.0, the system provides transfer rate performance up to 180 MB/s to disk.

RDX-based solutions include single dock systems, LAN-attached disk-based appliances, and multi-cartridge removable disk libraries. RDX systems are used by organizations for data storage, backup, archive, disaster recovery and cloud seeding, among other applications.

The free RDX Utility and supporting firmware is available to all Tandberg Data RDX users for download at www.tandbergdata.com.
