Scale Computing Builds Acronis Backup Functionality into Hyperconverged Infrastructure Solution

Available immediately, the Acronis functionality adds archiving, data protection, disaster recovery, and threat mitigation capabilities to Scale’s HC3 virtualization platform.

Scale Computing, a maker of hyperconverged infrastructure solutions for SMBs, has signed an agreement to make archiving, data protection, disaster recovery, and threat mitigation capabilities in Acronis Backup, a BDR solution from cyber protection vendor Acronis, available on Scale’s HC3 platform.

Available immediately, the added functionality augments existing high availability, backup, replication, and recovery features already included in HC3. Scale customers often deploy a separate BDR solution as well, however, to leverage storage systems not supported by the Scale solution or to add data protection services not included in HC3. Building Acronis Backup into the product relieves users from purchasing and managing that extra software.

“Faced with ever-increasing volumes of data along with the growing threat of ransomware and other malware, IT professionals are under tremendous pressure to protect everything while ensuring production systems aren’t impacted. The good news is that protecting your organization’s data doesn’t have to be difficult,” said Pat Hurley, vice president and general manager for the Americas at Acronis, in prepared remarks. “With Acronis Backup on Scale Computing HC3, organizations gain a fast, scalable cyber protection solution that won’t consume their limited IT budgets.”

According to Scale, Acronis Backup compresses storage needs for its users up to 10x and significantly reduces backup-related management overhead by providing automated administration. Acronis Backup features now available in HC3 include long-term retention for data archiving, to meet regulatory compliance requirements cost-effectively; integrated anti-ransomware defenses backed by machine learning models that proactively block attacks and automatically recover affected files; and full bare metal system recovery, which allows organizations to complete recoveries up to twice as fast by restoring data to endpoints without an operating system in place.

In addition, the Acronis Universal Restore feature simplifies the recovery of entire systems to the same or dissimilar hardware and virtual machines using smart technology that automatically detects boot requirements. Granular recovery functionality enables users to find and restore specific files or folders without having to recover full databases or systems.

Acronis Backup provides flexible on-premises and cloud storage options as well, Scale says, enabling users to match deployments to their specific archiving and data protection needs.

“Data protection and disaster recovery are a necessity for IT organizations today, and many of our HC3 customers have implemented effective disaster recovery strategies that combine per VM snapshot scheduling with replication, failover, and recovery. Each HC3 appliance has built-in VM snapshots with scheduling capabilities that are flexible enough to implement almost any backup strategy,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder of Scale Computing, in a media statement. “With Acronis Backup, HC3 users are enabled to add market-leading archiving and data protection capabilities to their infrastructure. Our technologies are highly complementary, and HC3 customers, who are used to the flexibility and ease of use of our platform, will also benefit from the performance, ROI and TCO advantages offered by Acronis Backup.”

Acronis Backup on Scale Computing HC3 protects nearly all virtual machine operating systems supported by HC3, and can backup or restore anything from an individual VM to an entire system. In addition, the Acronis platform can store backup data in a wide range of storage locations, including HC3 virtual disks, existing NAS or SAN environments, and public cloud platforms.

Other recent enhancements to Scale’s portfolio include the introduction of hyperconverged infrastructure appliances for edge computing environments and the addition of support for Parallels Remote Application Server to HC3.

Acronis, meanwhile, rolled out a set of cyber security services last month in conjunction with a larger ongoing move to redefine itself as a data protection vendor offering both backup and security solutions. That effort will take a significant step forward in October when Acronis launches a new security suite called Total Protect at its first-ever Global Cyber Summit.
