Vendor to Watch: MSP Disposal

MSP Disposal helps channel pros securely dump electronic waste, and make a few bucks doing it.

IF YOU’RE LIKE most channel pros, you’re better at deploying hardware than getting rid of it.

In fact, if you’re really like most channel pros, you probably have a closet somewhere filled with equipment no one needs anymore, or clients with junk-filled closets of their own. You can take that stuff to a recycler, of course, but they’ll probably charge a fee, and how can you be sure they wiped all the data on those devices?

“Most MSPs don’t have a good, consistent process for removing electronic waste,” observes Ryan Nichols (pictured), head of business development at MSP Disposal. Founded by a former MSP, the company turns dumping e-waste from a hassle, security risk, and expense into a convenient revenue opportunity.

Simply go to their portal and request a shipment. Working through FedEx, MSP Disposal sends a pallet-sized box to your office or your customer’s. Fill it with PCs, servers, routers, firewalls, and anything else lying around, and then schedule a pickup. FedEx will return to haul everything away, using labels and a bill of lading sent automatically in advance via email.

When the crate arrives at MSP Disposal’s headquarters, the company removes and erases any hard drive it finds. “Every step of the process is time and date stamped,” Nichols says, and users receive verification certificates to prove the work was done.

After that, anything reusable gets sold, and you pocket 30% of the proceeds, minus $350 for the pallet and shipping. “It’s not going to make you rich,” Nichols says, “but the big thing is having a safe and consistent way of disposing of the data.”

There are no minimums to join, he continues, and you can use the service as often or infrequently as you wish. “When you need us, reach out to us,” Nichols says.
