Netatmo Welcome Security Camera Can Recognize Loved Ones

The new security camera has face recognition and allows for viewing of real-time and past events.

Having a web-enabled security camera is great. However, most of those products still have at least one quirk: They send out motion alerts every time the dog moves from the floor to the couch.

Instead of constantly wondering if this is the time that your house is actually being robbed, you could get the Netatmo Welcome. This new DIY security camera is truly a smart one, since it has face recognition technology that can recognize each and every family member (even the furry ones!).

Whenever Fido, Fluffy, or one of the kids enters the room, Welcome will send specific names to your iOS and/or Android smartphone. If it doesn’t recognize the visitor, it will notify you of that as well. The Netatmo security camera even allows you to opt out of notifications or keep recorded footage, based on each family member.

Netatmo isn’t planning to offer cloud storage, so you’ll need to pop in the included SD card. That keeps everything nice and local—and inexpensive. The Welcome doesn’t have any type of subscriptions or monthly fees.

Other Welcome features include 1080p images, a 130-degree field of view, night vision, an embedded microphone, and WiFi support.

“Netatmo is proud to present Welcome. Its outstanding technology makes today’s smart homes even smarter,” says Fred Potter, CEO and founder of Netatmo. “Welcome addresses two major consumer needs: to know when their loved ones are home and to be aware if a stranger breaks into their residence. Welcome brings piece of mind to all family members.”

Netatmo will offer the Welcome sometime in the second quarter of 2015. At that time, the company also plans to release “Welcome Tags” to extended the camera’s reach. These sensors can be placed indoors and outside, on windows or doors, where they will alerts users to additional movement. Pricing for both have yet to be announced, but we do know that the Tags will be a separate purchase.
