HPE Ships Edge Computing Products for IT/OT Solutions

The new additions to the vendor’s Edgeline product family are designed to accelerate the deployment and simplify the management of Internet of Things and other solutions that mix information technology with operational technology.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has introduced a wave of hardware and software offerings aimed at accelerating the implementation and simplifying the management of edge computing deployments.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company showcased the new offerings today at the European edition of its annual Discover partner event, which is taking place this week in Madrid.

Optimized for use with Internet of Things solutions that combine information technology and operational technology (OT), the new products revolve around a pre-integrated hardware appliance named the Edgeline EL300 Converged Edge System. Available immediately worldwide, that device features Intel Core i5 processors, up to 32GB of memory, and 3TB of storage. The unit also supports Intel Movidius Myriad X vision processing units for solutions requiring edge-based video analytics and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Based on a fan-less design, the Edgeline EL300 is hardened against shock, vibration, humidity, dust, and extreme temperatures. Pricing begins at $2,532.

The new Edgeline appliance, which joins a wider family of Converged Edge Systems unveiled in June, features two new software products with zero-fee licensing. One of them, HPE’s Edgeline OT Link Platform, is designed to automate the interaction between IT and OT systems found in industrial settings like factories, power generation plants, and telecommunications facilities, among others.

Adapters built in-house by HPE are also available for connecting the solution to OT platforms. An accompanying SDK and API allow third-party developers to create adapters of their own.

The adapters are available today for $89 and up. The Edgeline OT Link Platform will ship in the first quarter of 2019.

Also introduced today and embedded at no additional cost within the Edgeline EL300 is a new administration platform called HPE Edgeline Integrated System Manager. The solution includes tools for provisioning, monitoring, updating, and securing Edgeline devices.

To help users plan, design, build, and run edge deployments linking IT and OT platforms, HPE’s Pointnext group has also created a new Edgeline Field Application Engineering Services offering. It’s available worldwide immediately.

Edge computing plays a critical role in boosting the performance of IoT solutions by reducing the exchange of information across long distances to and from remote data centers and cloud platforms. According to Gartner, 75 percent of business data will be generated and processed outside traditional data centers and the cloud by 2022, versus less than 10 percent this year.

“Deploying IoT, edge, and cyber-physical systems is a challenge requiring a fresh look at uniting the physical and digital worlds,” said Dr. Tom Bradicich, vice president and general manager of converged servers, edge and IoT systems at HPE, in prepared remarks. “With today’s announcements, we enable our customers to accelerate the delivery of applications that capitalize on edge data, safeguarded by enterprise-class management. And we lay the groundwork for a new ecosystem of intelligent edge solutions to drive innovation and growth across industries.”

Elsewhere in Madrid this week, HPE unveiled new flash memory products and an updated edition of its InfoSight storage management and analytics solution that are designed to enhance the speed and availability of data center storage solutions.
