Company also intros new 2U Twin2 systems, which feature four hot-plug DP server nodes and combine support for up to one terabyte of DDR3 memory, 12 hot-swap 3.5-inch storage drives, and optional 40 Gb/s QDR InfiniBand connectivity.

Server technology innovator Super Micro Computer Inc. (Supermicro) launched this week its first servers optimized for the new 8- and 120-core AMD Opteron 6100 Series processors (codenamed “Magny Cours”).

The launch includes Supermicro’s new 2U Twin2 systems with four hot-plug DP computing nodes (supporting up 96 processing cores), quad-processor 1U servers that support up to 48 processing cores in 1U, and new GPU-optimized systems.

In addSupermicro 2U Twin2 Systemsition to these system architectures, Supermicro is also introducing advanced new UP, DP, and MP solutions in standard 1U, 2U, 4U, and tower form factors.

Supermicro believes the quad-channel DDR3 on these new 8- and 12-Core servers will “double the memory capacity and accelerate memory performance up to 66 percent, especially for large data sets.”

Supermicro president and CEO Charles Liang says the system architectures and resource-sharing designs “deliver the highest performance-per-watt and performance-per-dollar, with unmatched density that is further enhanced with these new generation G34 socket AMD Opteron processors.”

Liang adds, “Our new 2U Twin-Squared systems feature four hot-plug DP server nodes and combine support for up to one terabyte of DDR3 memory, twelve hot-swap 3.5″ storage drives, and optional 40 Gb/s QDR InfiniBand connectivity.”

In a statement submitted to EH Publishing, AMD says Supermicro is supplying the channel with “innovative, high-end solutions that are designed to deliver the performance and power efficiency that customers need.”

AMD vice president and general manager Patrick Patla says the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform, which includes the 12-core x86 processor, “helps enable superior overall system performance and efficiency, addressing the compute-intensive demands of today’s IT, datacenter, high-performance computing (HPC), and cloud-computing environments.”

The same series of AMD processors are supported by all of these UP, DP, and MP servers. The improved AMD HyperTransport technology doubles the number of HT 3.0 links to four, which can now provide up to 25.6 GB per second at 6.4 GT/s per link, adding to I/O bandwidth.

In addition to those delivered by 12-Core AMD Opteron 6100 processor-based systems, Supermicro offers G34 Socket-based solutions with the following high-performance design features:

  • Onboard 6Gb/s SAS (2.0) designs
  • 2U Twin2 designs (four hot-plug DP nodes, up to 1 TB memory, 12 hot-swap 3.5″ drives, optional 40 Gb/s QDR InfiniBand, and redundant Gold Level power supplies)
  • GPU-optimized designs (1U supports 2 GPUs)
  • Universal I/O (UIO) designs
  • High memory capacity (16 and 32 DIMM models)
  • High-efficiency VRMs
  • High-efficiency power supplies
