Novell Hopes to Assuage Server-Swap Anxieties

Manufacturer says PlateSpin workload management solutions will reduce lost time, disruption, and costs associated with server migration.

System builders looking to introduce their customers to the power, energy efficiency, and superior virtualization capabilities of the new Intel Xeon 5500 series processor face a major barrier: CIO anxieties about the risk, cost, and complexities of moving production workloads onto new server hardware.

For that reason, Novell is touting its PlateSpin workload management solutions. The company says its PlateSpin Recon and PlateSpin Migrate products give system builders tools for moving customers onto new Intel-based servers quickly and cost-effectively.

Server Migration Concerns

Most IT executives would be far more likely to capitalize on the savings and performance that Intel Xeon 5500 series processor-based servers deliver if not for several serious deployment concerns, including:

  • Lost Time–Migrating workloads onto new hardware is typically a tedious, labor-intensive process that often takes up to eight hours per server.
  • Operation Disruption–Migration projects require planning and an automated approach, as manual server migrations impact the availability and responsiveness of mission-critical applications.
  • Steep Costs–Overworked technicians and unavailable systems are a recipe for increased migration-project expense and decreased new-platform ROI.

Novell Makes Case for PlateSpin

According to Novell, its PlateSpin workload management solutions equip system builders to “make server migration a faster, easier process for their clients.”

PlateSpin Recon is a workload analysis and management solution designed to help IT managers take the guesswork out of planning a migration as well as reduce risk and lower costs.

PlateSpin Migrate is a workload portability and migration solution that transfers workloads to and from any physical or virtual host over the network, automatically and without downtime on production servers.

PlateSpin workload management solutions have been deployed in over 1 million migrations since 2005.
