Microsoft Introduces Open Value Subscription Program

The Redmond giant lets SMB customers “subscribe” to software in a lease-like way.

Microsoft has announced the availability of the Open Value Subscription Program to SMBs in the United States and Canada. The program, set to launch on March 3, will provide a way for SMB customers to “subscribe” to the Microsoft software they want to use in their businesses in a lease-like way, according to Eric Ligman, Microsoft U.S. senior manager.

While not an actual lease, Ligman explains, the program provides the up-front costsaving benefits of a lease-type model. SMBs can pay to use the software for a set period of time, with the ability to increase or decrease as their business size does, year by year.

At the end of the initial term, clients can continue the subscription, buy it out to own the licenses, or end it. The program is also part of the Open Value structure, which means resellers will be able to offer Open Value subscriptions through their current volume license distributors.
