Intermedia Targets Robocalls with Spam Caller Protection

UCaaS and collaboration provider Intermedia has added a feature called Spam Caller Protection to its Unite business phone and communications system.

Provided free to Unite customers, Intermedia’s Spam Caller Protection component is designed to automatically recognize robocalls and scammers, provide alerts before a call is answered, and block calls identified as spam or fraudulent before they reach employees.

The new feature extends spam caller protection to every Intermedia Unite endpoint device, including Unite desktop and mobile apps, helping to protect businesses and employees from the potential financial harm these calls can pose while also eliminating the need to maintain local block lists. The system seeks to maximize efficiency and productivity as well by saving employees from wasting time and resources when manually handling spam calls. 

Administrators can control blocking, tagging, and routing of spam calls using customized policies. 

According to Intermedia, the volume of spam calls increased nearly eight times between 2017 and 2018, and is projected to continue on the same trajectory in 2019. According to call protection company First Orion, meanwhile, spam calls have jumped from 3.7% of all mobile calls two years ago to 29.2% last year. First Orion expects that number to to reach 50% by the end of this year.

“Unfortunately, spam and fraudulent calls have become an epidemic that derails businesses from their productive work days and leads to new security vulnerabilities,” said Mark Sher, vice president of unified communications product and marketing at Intermedia, in prepared remarks. “More and more consumers are using robocall-blocking apps on their personal devices, but UCaaS providers have been slower to apply the technology to business telephony services. With that in mind, we created Intermedia’s Spam Caller Protection to help businesses address these pesky and potentially dangerous calls and provide them with the tool they need to create a more secure and productive business, all at no extra cost.”

Intermedia added integration between Unite and Datto’s Autotask PSA solution last month.
