Eaton DIN Rail Industrial UPS: The Right Tool for the Right Job

This sponsored Partner Program Profile explains how the new DIN Rail UPS helps Eaton partners target emerging power management needs in industrial and manufacturing markets.

Ask any craftsman. Having the right tool for the job is critical. That’s why Eaton is introducing DIN rail industrial UPS to deliver reliable power and battery backup to computing, networking, control, and storage equipment in increasingly remote and automated environments.

“You definitely want the right product for the right application,” says Rick Conneely, growth segments director at Eaton. “I think we oftentimes try to shoehorn in existing IT-oriented UPS” but industrial and edge computing environments have unique requirements that the Eaton DIN rail UPS is designed to meet. “We’re taking this UPS functionality and moving it down into a smaller form factor that fits into a cabinet that can be placed just about anywhere. It’s really a form factor play. The products are UL 508 recognized and that’s important because it means that they can be used within an industrial control panel.”

quoteThe Eaton DIN rail industrial UPS is designed to withstand the demanding conditions of today’s modern environments. A compact housing with DIN rail mounting enables easy integration in nontraditional IT spaces, including factories, warehouses, and edge computing locations. AC and DC power options offer compatibility with a wide variety of IT and operational technology (OT) applications.

In addition, the DIN rail UPS guards against expensive downtime and helps businesses stay in control of their operations, offering easy preventative maintenance and initial troubleshooting. “It has a fast transfer time if there’s a loss of power or an interruption in power and it transfers it over to a battery to maintain control of that equipment that you’re trying to keep up and running,” Conneely says.

EATON DIN RAIL UPS FEATURES

Built to fit in small spaces, the Eaton DIN rail UPS is tested and certified to UL 508 for use in industrial panels. The rugged metal housing has a pre-installed clamp that enables quick mounting to 35 mm DIN rails. Other features include:

  • A fanless design with fewer parts that are vulnerable to dust and ESD protection
  • Mounts securely within the safety of an electrical enclosure
  • Made to withstand vibrations with a heavy-duty chassis and secure connectors
  • A wide operating temperature range (32 ËšF to 122 ËšF) enabling it to operate in extremely hot or cold environments
  • Easy to deploy, easy to assess, and can function automatically without being in front of the unit

For managed service providers (MSPs) partnering with Eaton, the new offering opens up more market opportunities. “Modernization of factories is happening. Whether you’re a large fabrication factory or a mom-and-pop metal working shop, they’re all looking to automation and new technologies to be more competitive in the global landscape,” says Conneely, who adds that MSPs will be asked to support compute, storage, and networking in more challenging locations. And now with the Eaton DIN rail UPS you no longer need a 19-inch rack.

That moves the customer conversation beyond the IT department to OT as well as facility technology (FT), Conneely notes. “They’re going to be asking for robotics and automation and better data analytics, along with cloud computing and edge computing, and MSPs will need to be able to provide that.”

The new DIN rail UPS AC and DC offerings are an important portfolio addition for Easton and its partners. “What I’d say Eaton brings from a distributed IT perspective is that we’re focused on the space. We have DIN rail mounted switches for Ethernet switches. We have the enclosures that
these products will fit into. We have the cabling that allows them to be under harsh conditions. And so we’re looking to harden this whole space and the infrastructure to support that. We’re in the business of keeping the compute, storage, and networking up and running and communicating, and that’s why the DIN rail UPS is an important element for us.”
