Fortinet Publishes 2025 Insider Risk Report
Global benchmark study reveals how insider threats differ from external attacks and why data loss is often unintentional.
Key findings from the report include:
- 77% of organizations experienced insider-related data loss in the last 18 months, with 21% reporting more than 20 incidents during that period.
- 41% said their most serious insider incident cost between $1 million and $10 million, and 9% reported losses even higher.
- 62% of incidents stemmed from human error or compromised accounts rather than intentional misconduct, often through email, collaboration apps, or personal cloud accounts.
- 72% of security leaders lack full visibility into how users interact with sensitive data across endpoints, SaaS apps, and GenAI tools.
- Customer records (53%) and personally identifiable information (47%) were the most at-risk data types, followed by business-sensitive plans (40%), user credentials (36%), and intellectual property (29%).
- 72% reported rising budgets for insider risk programs, with 66% citing real-time behavioral analytics as a top priority.
