Acronis Unveils EDR Addition to Cyber Protect Cloud Suite

Due to ship early next year, the new solution is designed to make a complex task simple enough for people without deep security expertise to understand, according to CMO Michael Callahan (pictured).

Acronis has unveiled an EDR addition to Cyber Protect Cloud, it’s its unified, all-in-one security and backup solution suite.

The company previewed the new offering this morning on the opening day of its 2022 #CyberFit Summit event in Miami.

Acronis Advanced Security + EDR, the company says, stands out from competing products by offering detailed information about attacks in graphical formats and “pretty plain English” that even people without deep security expertise can understand, according to Acronis CMO Michael Callahan.

“What we’ve done is taken a super complex technology in this idea of EDR and made it so that any of us could manage it,” he says.

The new system also lets users execute remediation measures like rolling back ransomware encryption with a single click. According to Callahan, intuitive functionality like that is core to the software design principles Acronis has long embraced.

“What we do and part of what we believe—it’s core to our product strategy—is making things simple so that normal people like us can actually do it,” he says.

Powered by a machine learning-based event correlation and interpretation engine with attack chain visibility mapped to the MITRE ATT&CK framework, the Acronis system is backed around the clock on a “follow the sun” basis by SOCs in the U.S., Switzerland, Singapore, and Israel. Roughly 10% of the company’s 2,200 employees work in one of those facilities.

An early access program for Advanced Security + EDR opens in December. General availability is expected in the first quarter of next year.

The new solution joins a tightly integrated platform that combines a core set of basic functions provided at no cost with “advanced packs” offering more sophisticated features in areas like endpoint protection, email security, file sync and share, and BDR.

Acronis added a data loss prevention module to the product as well in June. That was one of 40 product releases this year, according to Acronis CEO Patrick Pulvermueller, who says the company shipped more than 60 product enhancements in the last 12 months as well.

Updates and additions like that have been arriving in a steady stream since 2019, when the suite then known as Acronis Cyber Protect and renamed Cyber Protect Cloud last year, first reached market, following a development process dating back to 2013. The platform’s underlying design philosophy from the beginning has reflected a conviction within Acronis that multi-vendor security stacks are both more expensive and less effective than tightly integrated suites built on a unified code base.

“The amount of updates you need to install and the amount you have to train your technicians every single day is just unbearable,” says Pulvermueller about “best-of-breed” data protection environments.

Some 67% of organizations have more than five security and backup solutions running simultaneously at present, according to research from Acronis published in August. Fully three-fourths of participants in the same study said they’re currently working to consolidate security vendors. That’s up from 29% just two years earlier.
