ICYMI: Our Channel News Roundup for the Week of May 3rd

Security solutions from Trend Micro and Kaspersky, hardware from HP, new leadership at Tech Data, and a 12-year-old who will make you feel like a lockdown slacker are among the far too numerous stories we’re just now bringing your way.

Sunday is Mother’s Day (some help for those who forgot until this moment), so step up. And a shout-out for those with mothers in the tech biz. Why? For one reason, those old jokes saying, “”X is so easy your mother could do it,”” fall flat. Here’s to the kids on the playground slinging insults like, “”Go and cry to mommy!”” and the moms who raise them.

StellarOneSecurity news. What do cybercriminals target? Everything, so the new TXOne StellarProtect from Trend Micro and TXOne Networks secures endpoints in industrial control systems and operational networks.

MSPs and MSSPs might enjoy the new Sumo Organizations from Sumo Logic, a multi-account management solution to increase security intelligence across all their managed operations, departments, and teams.

To offer current and future customers and channel partners unified network performance monitoring and diagnostics, LiveAction acquired CounterFlow AI.

Help cut out spoofing and phishing consequences with the new DigiCert Smart Seal, which shows the site has been validated and protected by an active certificate. In other words, more security than the HTTPS lock symbol.

HP EliteOne 800 G8Other product news. Helping careless customers keep track of data is a full-time job, but the new Axcient x360Recover Direct-to-Cloud suite can turbocharge your BCDR without adding local appliances.

You can look at the HP EliteOne 800 G8 All-in-One (pictured), and it will look back with its pop-up dual-facing camera. 23.8- and 27-inch models include premium audio features, and all are powered by an 11th Gen Intel Core processor. This week’s stats ticker:

Feeling efficient lately? The new report from NinjaRMM titled “”Adapting to the Digital Future: IT Efficiency in 2021“” says you might rethink. Take endpoint patch management, for one painful example: 77% of IT teams spend more than three hours per endpoint on patch management. MSPs who do it better should highlight that fact, since only 24% of business leaders report their MSP handles patch management for them, 28% let MSPs manage endpoint security, and 41% get MSP server support. Sadly, 87% have an increase in new devices under management, but haven’t automated routine device maintenance. 900 business leaders in the U.S., U.K., and Germany involved with IT were surveyed.

PC Matic did a public opinion survey concerning cybersecurity and government readiness, and “”concerning”” is the key finding from “”Americans on Cybersecurity“”. 57% are not confident the government can defend itself against a cyber attack at the federal level, and 61% believe the feds should do more to protect American citizens from such threats. IT professionals, with more hands-on knowledge, aren’t much more confident, with 46% doubting the defensive capabilities of the U.S. government. 40% would like to see Congress pass cybersecurity-related legislations, but only a quarter believe Congress should allocate more funding to cybersecurity attack prevention.

ISACA and HCL Technologies just released the “”State of Cybersecurity 2021 Part 1 survey report“”, and found the cybersecurity workforce escaped the employment bloodbath seen in many industries during lockdowns. However, hiring and retention challenges from years past continue at similar levels. 61% of the 3,600 infosec professionals surveyed indicated their teams are understaffed, leading 55% to unify some cybersecurity positions. Half say applicants are not well-qualified, which explains the only 31% who say HR understands their cybersecurity hiring needs. Fixes? 43% are training non-security staff to move into security roles, 37% use more contract employees or outside contractors, and 23% are using more reskilling programs.

Lockdown ChampAnd all you did in lockdown was watch Tiger King. Many of us had extra time during the COVID-19 pandemic, as shown by the bump in Netflix and other streaming service viewing. Brag on your Tiger King and Marvel Cinematic Universe knowledge all you want, but not in front of Mike Wimmer, a twelve-year old in Salisbury, N.C.

Wimmer finished high school by doing more and more online classes. Well, finished isn’t the correct word since he graduated with a GPA of 5.45 and was class valedictorian.

Time for Netflix? Nope. Wimmer, at the same time, got his two-year college associates degree, with a GPA of 4.0.

You: Cheetos dust all over the couch. Mike Wimmer, 12: High school AND college degree during the pandemic. Oh, yeah, he also created his own startup business to simplify smart home technology.
