Epson Ships First Desktop A3 Scanners

The DS-30000 and DS-32000 are designed to meet increasing demand for compact yet fast and durable large-format products at affordable price points.

Epson America has shipped two large-format document scanners designed to meet growing demand for versatile, high-speed products with affordable price points.

The new DS-30000 and DS-32000, both available now, are the first A3 models in Epson’s desktop and workgroup scanner portfolio. Desktop A3 devices are increasingly popular among organizations like law firms, insurers, and government agencies that process large volumes of paper in different sizes and formats but don’t want to spend anywhere from $6,000 to as much as $25,000 on a flatbed or production-level scanner, according to Greg Newcomb, an associate product manager for scanners at Epson.

“These two models come in around $3,000 and $4,000,” he says.

Both units feature a 120-sheet auto document feeder and a 2.7-inch touchscreen control panel, and support high duty cycles and rapid scanning speeds. The DS-30000, for example, can handle up to 70 pages per minute and a peak daily duty cycle of 30,000 sheets. The DS-32000 accommodates up to 90 pages per minute and 40,000 sheets per day.

“These almost qualify as what we would call low-end production scanners,” Newcomb says.

Equipped for dual-sided scanning, the two systems can handle sheets up to 11″ x 17″, including folded pages, plastic cards, and passports up to 5mm thick. The DS-32000 can also scan sealed envelopes, a feature often needed in mail rooms and other settings required to store proof that incoming letters arrived unopened.

“Paper protection” functionality automatically detects when stapled documents are in danger of ripping during the feeding process. “[It] can stop the scan before the page can tear,” Newcomb says. The two products also come with a “slow mode” option that allows users to scan delicate pages safely, as well as double-sheet feeding protection and dynamic page skew correction.

Other shared features in the new units include support for both Windows and MacOS clients, built-in TWAIN and ISIS drivers, and both document capture and OCR software capable of exporting scans either to online solutions such as Microsoft Office or to searchable .PDF files.

Both units are also designed to pack large-format scanning capabilities into compact footprints. Additionally, the DS-32000 adjusts to provide two scanning positions. “You pull the lever and it rotates into a standard vertical position for feeding. You pull the lever again and the body can then rotate flat into a horizontal feeding position,” Newcomb says.†

A third fold-up storage position conserves desktop real estate when the device is not in use. “It can be easily pushed up against the back of a desk or cabinet and not take up a lot of space,” Newcomb observes.

The DS-30000 sells for $2,699 MSRP; the DS-32000 retails for $3,799. Both units come with a three-year limited warranty that includes next-business-day replacement, and are available through authorized Epson CapturePro resellers.
