Rain Computer Release Performance Storage Drive for Music and Video Applications

The portable StormDrive offers maximum data transfer throughput of 4.8 gigabits per second via single USB 3.0 connection.

The portable StormDrive offers maximum data transfer throughput of 4.8 gigabits per second via single USB 3.0 connection.

On the heels of new desktop and mobile workstations for music and video applications, Rain Computer has also released a new pocket-sized hard drive.

The new portable hard drive, StormDrive, is offered in a choice of standard hard drive or solid state drive (SSD). It is designed to deliver large audio and video files at high speed via USB 3.0.

The latest Rain Computer storage drive offers a single USB 3.0 connection. The so-called “super speed USB” offers data transfer maximum throughput of 4.8 gigabits per second, which is roughly ten times faster than the 2.0 USB predecessor.

StormDrive contains the same hard drive architecture used in Rain’s LiveBook Mobile Audio Workstation and the LiveBook V2 Mobile Video Graphics Workstation. Users are offered a choice of conventional 250 GB, 500 GB, or 750 GB drives that spin at 7200 RPM and use a 16 MB cache. A Solid State Drive, or SSD, is also available offering its user instant access to data with no moving parts and fast transfer rates. The newer SATA III SSD drives are available in 256 GB or 512 GB capacities.

“It used to be that the only way to get the kind of speed you need for audio and video was to use the drives in your computer,” says Rain Computers CEO Kevin Jacoby. “But with faster drives and high speed connections like USB 3.0, you can easily stream all of your projects right into the computer from a drive that’ll fit in your back pocket.”

StormDrive Multimedia USB 3.0 Hard Drive starts at $99. It is compatible with all computers and operating systems, including Windows, OS X, and Linux. StormDrive is available now through the Rain Custom Shop and through select Rain Authorized Dealers.
