SMC Networks Launches VDSL2 Extended Ethernet Solution

The company targets broadband network demands of hospitality industry with TigerAccess extended Ethernet switch, enabling connectivity in multiunit buildings over existing phone wires.

Irvine, Calif.-based SMC Networks, a networking solutions provider for the SMB and enterprise markets, announced the launch of the TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch (SMC7824M/VSW) and TigerAccess Extended Ethernet CPE (SMC7801A/VCP) at Interop Las Vegas 2009 (booth #969). Offered as a complete solution for multiunit environments such as hotels and office buildings, the TigerAccess VDSL2 Extended Ethernet Solution enables the deployment of voice and data access at speeds up to 100Mbps over existing category 1, 2 or 3 wiring, according to the company.

In addition to two Gigabit copper uplink ports, the TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch supports up to 24 ports of VDSL2 connectivity with data transfer speeds of up to 100Mbps. Software features including Quality of Service (QoS) and IGMP ensure support for advanced applications such as HDTV streaming and Video on Demand and other services of value in hospitality environments.

The TigerAccess Extended Ethernet CPE (Customer Premise Equipment), which is deployed at the customer end of the VDSL2 line, such as in a guest room or office, features a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port to connect to any PC or Macintosh with a 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX network interface card.

“Advanced applications such as high-definition television, in-room video conferencing, and high-speed Internet are quickly becoming service offerings that both business and casual travelers alike expect at a minimum in the hotels in which they stay. Hotels that don’t offer these services these days are losing potential revenue,” says Iain Kenney, director of product marketing at SMC Networks. “However, for many existing hotels without pre-run Ethernet cabling, upgrading the existing infrastructure to support Ethernet cabling is not cost-effective. Our VDSL2 solution enables users to deliver high-speed network connectivity over the existing phone cables easily and affordably without the need to rewire anything.”

The TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch (SMC7824M/VSW) features two RJ-21 ports, which contain 26 extended Ethernet ports, two RJ-45 Gigabit uplink ports, a 100BASE-T management port, and RJ-45 console port. Based on the VDSL2 standard, the SMC7824M/VSW delivers speeds of up to 100Mbps to a distance of 800 feet.

The SMC7824M/VSW offers a host of features including: Spanning Tree protocol, VLAN support for up to 256 groups, Quality-of-Service, MultiLink Trunking (LACP), port mirroring, and RADIUS client. The switch can be managed via Telnet, SSHv2, SNMP manager (including SNMPv3), and the RS232 console port.

The TigerAccess Extended Ethernet CPE (SMC7801A/VCP), which delivers an Ethernet data link speed of up to 100 Mbps in full-duplex mode, simultaneously supports standard telephone services and connects to PC- and Macintosh-based computer systems through a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port. When paired with the Extended Ethernet Switch, the SMC7801A/VCP enables broadband connectivity without the need for any rewiring.

The SMC TigerAccess Extended Ethernet Switch and Extended Ethernet CPE are backed by a limited lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical support, and will be available worldwide in July 2009.
