Barracuda Buys Bot Mitigation Technology from InfiSecure

The acquired systems are intended to augment protection from automated threats that Barracuda added to its web application firewall products two months ago. By ChannelPro

In a bid to shield customers from the growing spectre of automated threats, Barracuda Networks has purchased bot detection assets from InfiSecure Technologies, a specialist in low-latency detection and mitigation of advanced bots. According to Barracuda, the acquired systems will help it augment capabilities in the Advanced Bot Protection technology it added to its WAF-as-a-Service and Web Application Firewall platforms in May.

As bots evolve and simulate human behavior more and more closely, Barracuda argues, bot detection and mitigation strategies must evolve as well. "Low-and-slow" bots, for example, which request data slowly and rotate IP addresses often, require special fingerprinting techniques to detect. Combining InfiSecure’s technology with the Barracuda Global Threat Intelligence Infrastructure’s diverse set of behavioral data points, Barracuda says, will arm its WAF solutions to combat such attacks.

In addition, InfiSecure’s machine learning layer automatically profiles applications individually to provide application-specific bot detection and mitigation capabilities. That's an important capability at a time when generic bot detection technologies can fail to address bots written for specific applications.

“This strategic technology acquisition further strengthens our application security portfolio and our commitment to provide application security to our customers,” said Tim Jefferson, senior vice president of engineering for data protection, network, and application security at Barracuda, in a press statement. “InfiSecure perfectly complements our recently released Advanced Bot Protection and will bring next-generation capabilities to our WAF-as-a-Service and Web Application Firewall offerings.”

In recent weeks, Barracuda has also added support for Microsoft Azure Virtual WAN to its CloudGen Firewalls, rolled out an all-new cloud security optimization and remediation solution, and shipped an analytics solution designed to provide dynamic information on SD-WAN connections, transport data, security, and both web and network traffic based on data collected from firewalls.
