Backup provider deal promises more resources for MSP partners

Hosvara says it will invest in Dr. Backup while keeping the platform and support relationships its MSP partners know.

When a client needs lost files restored, it’s about more than backup software for MSPs. The infrastructure behind the service and the people who can help when recovery gets complicated are critical. Those are the parts of Dr. Backup that its new owner says it intends to strengthen.

Hosvara Inc. announced on September 18th it had acquired cloud backup provider Dr. Backup. Hosvara, parent company of MSP coaching firm Sibyl Consulting Group, says it will continue providing Dr. Backup’s existing platform to its MSP partners in the U.S. and Canada. Plus, it seeks to add resources to boost its channel-focused strategy.

“This is what Hosvara is built to do — bring proven MSP-focused businesses into a home where they can keep growing instead of getting swallowed up,” Hosvara CEO Nancy Henriquez said in a prepared statement.

More resources for a service MSPs depend on

Backup helps MSPs prepare clients for ransomware, accidental deletion and outages. When recovery is urgent, partners need a service that works and a vendor that responds. Hosvara’s plan could give Dr. Backup more room to develop its offering while preserving the relationships its partners rely on.

“What changes is what’s behind it: more infrastructure investment, more roadmap resources, and a company built specifically to serve MSPs for the long haul,” said Thomas Rechtien, Hosvara’s COO, in the announcement.

Hosvara has not named specific improvements or said when partners might see them in its announcement. Its commitment so far is to keep the existing service in place while investing in what supports it.

What changes for MSPs

As the person leading the acquisition, Henriquez is well versed in the MSP side of the business. She said preserving the trust Dr. Backup has built with partners is central to the deal.

“I’ve built and exited MSPs myself, so I know exactly what it takes to earn that kind of trust, and what’s at stake for the people who depend on it,” Henriquez said in the statement. “Our job now is to give Dr. Backup’s partners the same platform they’ve relied on for years, backed by more resources to keep investing in it.”

For MSPs, the announcement points to three potential benefits:

  • Continuity: Hosvara says current partners will keep the same platform and support team.
  • More investment: The company plans to add infrastructure and roadmap resources, though it has not detailed the first improvements.
  • Channel experience: Henriquez brings an MSP owner’s perspective, while Dr. Backup founder Mitch Romm will remain a strategic adviser for the next year.

For existing partners, the immediate promise is stability. If you are considering backup providers, Hosvara’s acquisition puts more resources behind an option that has served the channel for more than two decades.
