Intronis Introduces New Name and New BDR Appliance

Based on technology from parent company Barracuda Networks, the new solution is the first hardware-based offering from Intronis and the first edition of Barracuda Backup with subscription-based pricing.

In some of the most concrete changes since its acquisition by Campbell, Calif.-based Barracuda Networks Inc. last September, Intronis has adopted a new name and introduced a new hardware-based backup solution built with Barracuda technology.

The new moniker, Intronis MSP Solutions by Barracuda, underscores the company’s status as part of the Barracuda family, according to senior director of business development Neal Bradbury.

“Barracuda has a very well-known brand worldwide and Intronis is going to start to take advantage of that,” he says, adding that the new name also calls attention to Intronis’s focus on the managed service provider market.

“We’re actually calling out that MSPs are top and center,” Bradbury says.

The solution debuting today, named Barracuda Backup—Intronis MSP Edition, is a new managed services-oriented version of the Barracuda Backup system long available directly from Barracuda. Unlike that product, however, the new Intronis edition offers subscription-based, recurring fee pricing, enabling MSPs to pay for the system the same way they bill clients for BDR services.

Available in the same configurations as the standard edition of Barracuda Backup, from the entry-level 190 model up to the top-of-the-line 1090, Barracuda Backup—Intronis MSP Edition supplements Intronis’s software-based solutions with a hardware-based option for the first time, offering resellers more tools for meeting varied customer requirements.

It also gives Intronis partners access to functionality not available to them previously, including image and file replication to the cloud; instant recovery of VMware virtual machines; granular recovery of SharePoint data using technology from Minneapolis, Minn.-based Kroll Ontrack LLC available to Barracuda users since 2013; and support for Microsoft Cluster Server as well as Mac, Unix, and Linux end points.

“We’re really excited now to offer both solutions together to cover more use cases for more platforms,” says senior director of product management Chris Crellin, noting that the wider product portfolio also gives Intronis resellers fewer reasons to buy from multiple BDR vendors.

Bradbury discourages channel pros from viewing today’s announcement as a sign of waning commitment to Intronis’s traditional software-based solutions. “We’re continuing to invest in our products at the same time that we’re offering products from the existing Barracuda portfolio,” he says.

Though he declined to say definitively whether Intronis editions of other Barracuda solutions may be forthcoming, Bradbury left that possibility open. “We are getting a lot of feedback from our current partners, and as necessary we will kind of make some additions,” he says. He was equally non-committal about plans for merging the still separate Barracuda and Intronis channel programs.

“As of right now, Barracuda has a partner program and Intronis has a partner program, and a partner can join either one or both,” he states.
