GammaTech’s CA10 Durabook Welcomes Your Abuse

The semi-rugged ultra-mobile tablet PC (UMPC) features drop, shock, dust and water resistance

That laptop is like a trusty friend — a trusty friend that you often treat like dirt. You pound on it, drop food on it, and may even step on it every once in a while. Luckily, there are laptops out there that can take your everyday abuse.

GammaTech Computer Corp. just debuted its latest Durabook computer, the CA10 semi-rugged ultra-mobile tablet PC. This thing is tough as nails, meeting the Military Standard 810G and IP43 standard for drop, shock, dust and water resistance.

It’s also built to get you through the average workday, with a 10.1-inch TFT LCD display, a two-point resistive touchscreen panel, and a hot swappable dual-battery design that can deliver up to 8 hours of power. It also packs in Intel Wi-Fi Link 135 and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as a digitizer for turning analog touch inputs into digital inputs.

Other features include an Intel ATOM (Cedarview-M) processor, m-SATA SSD with storage ranging from 32GB to 128GB, assorted I/O ports, and a docking station with USB, RJ-45, DC-in, and serial ports. GammaTech says that the unit also has plenty of other options available, including GPS technology and a stylus, as well as a Mini PCI-E for WWAN/GPS (3G or LTE module) and a RFID/NFC module.

Also worth noting are some of the CA10’s quick menu capabilities. That lineup includes on/off switches for its RF device, a barcode scanner and RFID/NFC, as well as volume and brightness adjustment, on-screen keyboard, and more. It also has a Smart card reader, a pin pad device and a magnetic swipe reader, for users in need of conducting monetary transactions on the go.

“Access to a computer away from an office setting is very important in today’s world,” stated Jen Chen, GammaTech president. “The CA10 will benefit many different mobile-oriented service industries, including retail, logistics, healthcare and especially field service workers in the utilities, fleet management, and public safety sectors. Its durability, long battery life, various wireless connections, and dust and spray resistance capabilities make it especially suitable for these ultra-mobile individuals, who often find themselves in harsh environments.”

GammaTech is selling the CA10 now, with an MSRP of $1,299 and a 2-year warranty.
