Neptuny Rolls Out Version 3.3 of Caplan

The data center capacity management and planning solution adds improvements to its virtualization planning, benchmark management, and tagging, filtering, and searching features.

Neptuny has upgraded its Caplan data center and network management solution. Caplan 3.3 was rolled out this week with improvements in the area of virtualized environments.
Neptuny Rolls Out Version 3.3 of Caplan

Caplan is an agent-less, automated solution for large data centers and networks. Caplan supports Capacity Management for such IT resources as physical and virtual servers, databases, applications, storage, networks, and facilities. Caplan provides (both scheduled and on-demand) analyses, forecasts, what-if scenarios, and reports. The improvements seen in version 3.3 provide “relevant new features and major improvements in several key areas, mainly to improve the ability to manage virtualized environments and to support virtualization initiatives,” the company states in a press release to EH Publishing.

Caplan 3.3 includes several new and updated out-of-the-box connectors. IBM Tivoli Monitoring (updated to ITM v6 and expanded to support additional Unix and Windows metrics) and VMware vCenter (updated to version 2.5 of vCenter API) are the two most notable.

In addition, Neptuny’s Caplan 3.3 improves functionality in three key areas: virtualization planning, benchmark management, and tagging, filtering, and searching.

VIRTUALIZATION PLANNING
Caplan 3.3 provides two major features for supporting real-life virtualization planning. The first is an ability to simulate future placements (of both physical and virtual candidates) based on historical trends of resource consumptions and workloads. The other is the ability to storage space constraints based on defined DataStores in order to identify the optimal allocation scenarios and simulate DataStores configuration changes.

The latest version also extends the software’s ability to manage VMware ESX environments (including Resource Pool and DataStore related metrics) and improves support for vApps, and tracking events, such as DRS migrations.

BENCHMARK MANAGEMENT
Caplan 3.3 provides additional benchmark management capabilities. It adds the ability to upload and then use custom benchmarks in the same way it does standard benchmarks (e.g. SPEC or TCP-C).

TAGGING, FILTERING & SEARCHING
Improvements to tagging features of the product include the ability to manually tag entities, domains, analyses, models, and reports. It also enables the defining of configurable tagging rules (based on configuration metrics or regular expressions, for example).

Improvements to filtering include the ability to define actionable groups of entities for both systems and workloads based on the results of dynamically executed search queries. It also leverages entity filter definitions.

In search, Caplan 3.3 can search by tag. It can also search analyses, models, reports, domains, systems, and workloads. Advanced filtering and conditional expressions are also supported.
