Fox & Crow Group Research: Companies Have Overestimated the MSP Market

Fox & Crow Group’s new Instinct platform is designed to help vendors to better identify and target partners capable of executing successful channel programs.

LANSING, MI — The managed service provider (MSP) market may be smaller and less commercially viable than widely reported, according to Fox & Crow Group, based on more than a decade of sales execution data and more than five million outbound calls into the IT channel.

Industry estimates often place the number of MSPs in North America between 40,000 and 150,000. Fox & Crow Group said its data indicates the number of viable, active MSPs is closer to 17,500. That gap affects how companies size the market, plan growth and allocate capital across sales, marketing and partner programs.

“This is not a small discrepancy. It changes how the market is understood,” said Ian Richardson, founder, Fox & Crow Group. “If companies are working from an inflated view of the market, they make decisions based on demand that does not exist. That shows up over time in hiring, forecasting and partner strategy.”

Why MSP Maturity Matters

Most companies collect partner data in the context of their own products. Fox & Crow built its dataset across dozens of vendor engagements, creating a broader view of which MSPs respond, engage and consistently produce results.

Fox & Crow said the issue is not only how many MSPs exist, but how many have the operational and commercial maturity to support vendor partnerships.

The company’s analysis highlights measurable gaps across the MSP base:

  • Only 40% of MSPs have websites robust enough to support modern buyer evaluation.
  • Only 27% of MSPs actively advertise their cloud capabilities. Even fewer properly position higher-value services like security or AI.
  • Of the 47% of MSPs with a LinkedIn presence, 69% are not investing in follower growth, and 81% have not posted in the past 30 days. This suggests broad neglect of their online presence.

“Not all MSPs are the right fit for a channel vendor,” said Carrie Richardson, co-founder, Fox & Crow Group. “When you look at marketing activity, economic environment, and long-term revenue performance, you see a much smaller group of MSPs that can consistently execute.”

That gap between perceived and actual partner capacity affects how companies allocate resources across partner recruitment, marketing spends and sales coverage.

Introducing Instinct

To address this, Fox & Crow Group developed Instinct, a decision-intelligence platform built on 10 years of proprietary CRM data. It was designed to continuously refresh and enrich its view of the MSP market. The platform applies proprietary scoring technology to classify MSPs, evaluate marketing maturity and territory strength, and identify which partners are most likely to execute vendor programs successfully.

Fox & Crow partnered with Michigan-based Licens.io to build the data architecture and modeling framework behind Instinct, translating market data into a scalable software platform.

“Most sales teams are buying the same data and expecting different results,” said Michael Bommarito, CEO, Licens.io. “We partnered with Fox & Crow to build proprietary sales intelligence for the MSP market that improves over time.”

Instinct is intended to help manufacturers, distributors and SaaS vendors focus on MSPs with the capacity to execute. As a result, it improves targeting and reduces wasted effort.

“Most vendors are operating against assumptions that do not hold up under real conditions,” Richardson said. “The opportunity is not in building larger lists. It is in understanding the market as it exists.”

Instinct is now available to manufacturers, distributors and SaaS vendors operating in the IT channel. Learn more about Instinct.
