Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Aims to Make Data Lifecycle Management Easier

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) expanded its Alletra portfolio with new file, block, and data protection services designed to help customers reduce costs and complexity through one unified hybrid cloud platform.

At its Greenlake Day for storage briefing in Houston, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) unveiled a host of new storage data services and protections aimed to transform data lifecycle management. The new file and block services leverage HPE’s Alletra Storage MP and Greenlake Cloud so customers can store, manage, and protect all data types from a single platform across the hybrid cloud.

Referencing the Worldwide IDC Global DataSphere Forecast, the global volume of data generated is expected to double by 2026. Today, organizations deal with a complex mess of workload types and protocols requiring different support and management systems, making backup, protection, and recovery costly and difficult.

“Customers today face unprecedented challenges in managing their data. The rapid increase in the volume and complexity of data has forced organizations to manage it all with a costly combination of siloed storage solutions,” says Tom Black, executive vice president and general manager, HPE Storage.

To help organizations overcome this so-called “data lifecycle nightmare,” its new modular storage solution is configurable for either block or file stores. According to HPE, the disaggregated infrastructure supported by the HPE Alletra Storage MP allows for multiple storage protocols on the same hardware that can scale independently for performance and capacity, offer better price for performance, and the ability to cost-effectively scale out infrastructure in the future.

The new HPE Greenlake for File Storage aims to resolve the complex management, storage infrastructure silos, poor performance scaling, and low productivity across edge to cloud that file-based, data intensive applications endure. By bringing together the Greenlake cloud experience and VAST Data software, HPE hopes to offer a disaggregated, resilient, and modular architecture designed for exabyte scale that avoids tradeoffs, makes storage simple, and eliminates data silos and islands. It can process a lot of file data very quickly. According to HPE, customers should expect predictable performance with read speeds 80x faster than legacy NAS and a read throughput of 100s of GB/sec.

According to HPE, the HPE GreenLake for Block Storage is “the industry’s first disaggregated, scale-out block storage with a 100% data availability guarantee,” offering “the availability, performance and scalability of mission-critical storage with mid-range economics.” GreenLake for Block Storage claims to now offer better price for performance, but with the same always-on, always-fast architecture designed to help customers meet SLAs for mission-critical applications and mixed workloads.

HPE has also added a unified approach to backup and recovery and disaster recovery. First, HPE Greenlake for Disaster Recovery looks to reduce data loss and downtime through continuous data protection in HPE’s global SaaS platform built with technology from Zerto. Second, HPE Greenlake for Backup and Recovery protects on-prem with unified management and a single data catalog across private and public cloud workloads, delivered through a 100% SaaS solution with consumption-based billing.

HPE GreenLake for File Storage and HPE GreenLake for Block Storage are orderable today. As for its data protection offerings, HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery is generally available, while HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery is orderable in June 2023.
