ThinPrint Offers Free Desktop Extension Toolkit

The free add-on enables use of “.print 8.0” print management solutions in such VDI environments as Citrix XenDesktop or Microsoft VDI Suite.

Printing solutions provider ThinPrint is offering a free Desktop Extension toolkit for optimizing virtual desktop environment printing. The new tool enables ThinPrint users to integrate VDI printing into their print environments.

Charlotte K√ºnzell is a member of ThinPrint¥s Board of Directors. She believes SMBs are increasingly going to set up VDI environments for employees. “The introduction of the new licensing policy from Microsoft, as well as other shifts, makes setting up VDI environments even more attractive to many businesses,” she says. “Now, with the availability of ThinPrint’s new Desktop Extension, businesses can maximize the productivity and effectiveness of their virtual printing infrastructures.”

Desktop Extension enables uses of ThinPrint’s so-called “.print 8.0” print management solution in such VDI environments as Citrix XenDesktop or Microsoft VDI Suite. Desktop Extension enables ThinPrint’s .print 8.0 to deliver print data compression, connection-specific bandwidth control, SSL encryption of print data, a tracking service for analyzing printing costs, various print management and efficiency options, and a proprietary driver-free printing technology.

The base-level ThinPrint technology is already integrated on an OEM basis into all desktop products from VMware.

One of the most important features of ThinPrint’s Desktop Extension, according to ThinPrint, is the “session-in-session” technology. It enable printing via multiple sessions from the Citrix ICA protocol, the Microsoft RDP protocol, or the VMware PCoIP protocol. This ensures that the right printers are available for the user when virtual desktops use applications on the terminal server.

Also incorporated in the Desktop Extension is ThinPrint’s Virtual Channel Gateway. This facilitates cooperation between desktops and a central print server, enabling printouts even to local printers or home offices from the print server.†

Desktop Extension also includes ThinPrint’s V-Layer technology, which enables management of original printer drivers from a central location.

The central management of printer allocation has also been improved with ThinPrint’s new toolkit. Using GPOs (Group Policy Objects), its AutoConnect feature enables system administrators to set the printers that are to be made available to specific desktops–all from a central location.

Desktop Extension is free. Existing customers can download it as an individual component. The extension is an integrated component of .print Engine, .print Application Server Engine, and .print RDP Engine.
