Tandberg Data Intros Its LTO-5 Tape Autoloaders and Scalable Libraries

The data storage provider’s StorageLoader and StorageLibrary products employ the LTO Ultrium tape format. They will ship this summer.

This week, data protection solutions provider Tandberg Data unveiled its family of tape autoloaders and scalable libraries based on LTO-5 technology.

Using the latest iteration of the LTO Ultrium tape format, Tandberg Data says its StorageLoader and StorageLibrary products aim to shorten backup windows, simplify storage management, and reduce archiving costs for SMBs.

“LTO technology is the most economical way to protect the cascade of digital data generated daily by most businesses,” said Marije Stijnen, Tandberg Data’ vice president of marketing, calls LTO technology “the most economical way” to protect digital data in most business. “When storing data on a Tandberg Data LTO-5 automation solution,” she says, “customers will reap significant cost benefits over disk technology due to the higher capacity, smaller footprint, and lower power and cooling requirements.”

In a press release to EH Publishing, Tandberg Data states that its LTO-5 family of automation solutions aims to ease migration from LTO-3 or LTO-4 technologies. It does so, the company states, with an LTO-5 tape drive that offers backward write compatibility for one generation and backward read compatibility for two generations.

Moreover, the company claims the LTO-5 tape drives can store nearly two times more data than LTO-4 tape drives, making them ideal for automation customers.

LTO-5 tape media provides WORM (write once, read many) security and hardware-based 256-bit encryption. The LTO technology is also compatible with FIPS level-2 certification.

The Tandberg Data LTO-5 automation family includes:

  • StorageLoader LTO–An entry-level autoloader offering eight slots and up to 24 TB of compressed storage.

  • StorageLibrary T24–A compact tape library offering 24 slots and up to 72 TB of compressed storage.
  • Data StorageLibrary T40–This is a scalable tape library offering 24 or 40 slots and up to 120 TB of compressed storage.
  • StorageLibrary T40 Pass-Thru–This feature enables customers to add additional drives and storage capacities when required, enabling up to four StorageLibraryT40 units to be stacked together, increasing the number of slots from 40 to 77, 114 or 151 slots.

Tandberg Data says its LTO-5 autoloaders and libraries will be available in June 2010 through its channel of distributor and reseller partners. The MSRP of the LTO-5 StorageLoader starts at $5,200. The MSRP for Tandberg Data LTO-5 media is $120.

Tandberg Data says its automation family will with a 3-year warranty, including a first-year advance replacement, with additional service uplifts available.
