Security: The Enemy Within

Forget about hackers. Security and network operations pros say they are most concerned about threats coming from inside their own organizations. By Cecilia Galvin

What is the greatest threat to SMB and enterprise security? We are. That's one of the findings in The State of Network Security 2013: Attitudes and Opinions, a report based on survey data gathered at the RSA Conference in February by security solutions vendor AlgoSec, based in Boston.

Of the 179 information security and network operations professionals surveyed, 40.5 percent believe that accidental insider threats from, say, data leakage, pose the greatest security risk to their organizations; 22.1 percent say malicious insider threats are the greater risk.
Combined, 62.6 percent of respondents are most concerned about risk from inside company walls.

The “bring your own device” trend exacerbates that concern. In fact, 67.5 percent of IT pros surveyed say it increases risk exposure to security breaches, increases the complexity of network security, and creates compliance gaps.

With next-generation firewalls and other advanced security tools for keeping outside threats at bay, it's time for VARs and MSPs to develop strategies for neutralizing the enemy within.
