Officially, SolarWinds is still on the fence about converting its SolarWinds MSP unit into a separate, publicly owned business. Though four months have passed since the company first broached that possibility, and preliminary paperwork has now been filed with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a final decision on a potential spin-off has yet to be made.
“We continue on our journey in that exploration,” said SolarWinds MSP President John Pagliuca (pictured) yesterday during a virtual All Partners Meeting.
Yet Pagliuca made his enthusiasm for going solo clear to ChannelPro in October, and no one in his online audience Thursday had to read far between the lines to get the sense that a spin-off is something more than merely under consideration at present. Indeed, Pagliuca noted that his team is already hard at work on a new website and evaluating potential company names.
So while nothing is certain, the real question about a spin-off probably isn’t whether it will happen but when—and what it will mean for partners. Pagliuca and others provided clues during yesterday’s partner show.

All three areas will remain priorities should the company spin off as an independent, publicly owned business, said company executives during an online partner conference yesterday.
Speaking during an online meeting of its Varnex partner community, the distributor discussed booming SMB market conditions, the ongoing transformation of Varnex into a solution sales engine, and (of course) its pending merger with Tech Data.
Leaders at Tech Data offer advice—and outline steps the distributor has taken—to get partners ready for the future.
At the company’s latest online partner event, CEO Tim Weller (pictured) discussed hiring hundreds of product and partner-facing employees next year, raising cloud-related investments 40%, and keeping a watchful but wary eye on the security market.
The distributor plans to introduce self-serve quoting and integration tools this year and will unify its existing e-commerce systems with those it acquired through its purchase of Avnet Technology Solutions.
