No one likes working under the constant threat of criticism or worse. Good managers, Kaila says, create a safe, supportive atmosphere in which employees aren’t continually fearful of taking the blame for setbacks.
“Good times, we’re going to celebrate,” he says. “Bad times, we’re going to meet together and we’re going to help each other, be supportive, and encourage each other.”
Similarly, Kaila adds, employees should feel safe to speak their minds about ways to improve the business, rather than worried about saying the wrong thing or gaining a reputation as a complainer.
“You want to encourage their behavior of bringing anything they can to the table,” he says.
