If you have a mix of new and old PoE devices, including the newer 802.3at standard of 30 W maximum, you can set specific ports to that. You can also set a maximum wattage per port, and rank that port priority as low, high, or critical, giving you great flexibility for powering a range of devices with a single switch.
The next listing on the menu is Advanced Application. Here you dig into VLANs, MAC forwarding, Multicast control, link aggregation, policies, and more. If your network needs fine-tuning, here’s where you tweak the dial.
Global Device Cloud Management
Designed to manage all your Zyxel devices through the free Zyxel Nebula cloud, the Nebula Control Center (pictured) should appeal to MSPs and Zyxel resellers. You can monitor switches like the 1920 and 1930, access points, access point clients, and gateways; and drill down to configure most of the switch settings done via the local admin browser application. Basic features are free; more extensive controls can be licensed. Zyxel also has a portal to manage multiple devices but that looks pretty old-fashioned compared with the new Nebula Control Center.
The ZON, for Zyxel ONE Network, utility offers an on-premise console to view multiple Zyxel devices, including switches. First the utility does an IP network scan to find and list all Zyxel devices. The ZAC (Zyxel AP Configurator) module is handy if you have some installed. For switches, the utility provides a one-click connection to admin tools on individual switches.
Invisible Yet Manageable Switches
Anytime your users hear about a switch, your network has failed, so they don’t care about switches. But they do care if access points and key fob-enabled IoT door locks work, and that their IP phones have dial tone. While many PoE switches can check all these boxes, few offer the flexibility and performance of these new NebulaFlex switches.
Our lab has been running on an earlier version of the GS1920 switch for nearly a year without a single hiccup. Networks with one of these new GS1920-24HPv2 or XGS1930-28HP switches can look forward to reliable service with flexible PoE support and free basic cloud management.
