Open Mesh Cloud-Managed Wi-Fi : Page 2 of 2

Equipped with a router, PoE switch, and access points, Open Mesh is an easy-to-use Wi-Fi network that MSPs can manage from their smartphones. By James E. Gaskin

Wi-Fi Ahoy

The attractive access points look as professional as any you’ll see, and performance speeds right along. Signal strength and coverage depends on many variables, of course, but higher and faster frequencies (5 GHz) are more susceptible to interference and signals don’t penetrate walls all that well.

During a site test with a Lenovo X1 Carbon i7 ThinkPad, each wall killed one bar (or curved Wi-Fi signal indicator) from our initial AP. Adding a second AP meant that two rooms away we were still able to peg our speed test needle at 200+ Mbps (the test site has a 200 Mbps feed). The Network Overview page shows everything on one screen.

Other companies have access points, routers, and PoE switches, of course, but Open Mesh (aka Datto Networking) has done an excellent job providing an MSP-type network management console at consumer and small-office-friendly price points.

Datto Networking will switch to per-item, per-month pricing in January 2019 as part of its shift to an all-MSP sales model, but existing Open Mesh networks will keep their no-charge cloud-based management consoles. Which is good, because users and their integrators may not easily give up this fast and good-looking network system.
