Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230u Review - The Classic PC Tablet Gets Modern Day Parts: Page 2 of 7

Build Quality and Appearance

On the outside, the Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230U is like most other Thinkpads, sporting a matte black finish that's simple, stylish, and business friendly. I could give or take the chrome wrap around the top and side edges of the display; I didn't find it ugly but would have been just as happy with an all black exterior like the X1 Carbon. The only other cosmetic enhancement is the chrome Lenovo and Thinkpad logos on the lid and the Thinkpad logo on the palm rest, which elegantly and effectively tell those around you that you're all business, baby. A single Core i5 sticker is the only other embellishment. Thankfully, Lenovo laptops aren't generally adorned with billions of stickers for every part in the machine.

The outside material itself almost has a rubbery texture, making it easy to keep a firm grip no matter how it's held. It doesn't show smudges as easily as glossy exteriors, but oils from fingers will collect on the exterior and are a bit harder to clean off. Like all Thinkpads, it's well built and feels solid. The keyboard didn't flex without applying serious pressure, and was solid as a rock when closed.

The Twist is fairly IO friendly for an Ultrabook. On one side is the SIM slot for Wireless-WAN equipped machines, as well as a flash memory reader, Ethernet, mini-HDMI, USB 3, and a headphone/headset combo jack. On the other side is a heat vent, another USB 3 port, mini display port, and power. Because it converts to a tablet, Lenovo put the power button and screen rotation buttons on the side instead of above the keyboard.
