ZyXEL Introduces Intelligent Layer 2 Ethernet Switches for Converged Data, Video, and Voice Applications

Designed for converged networking, the new GS2210 switch series offers advanced security, agile traffic control, and intelligent PoE.

ZyXEL Communications has introduced its new GS2210 Series Gigabit Layer 2 Switches, designed for converged networking in hospitality, healthcare, business, and educational environments. The fully managed Layer 2 switching solution offers advanced security, agile traffic control, and intelligent PoE (Power over Ethernet).

“The new G2210 series switches are an essential addition to ZyXEL’s portfolio of carrier-grade Ethernet switches,” says Steven Joe, executive vice president for channel business for Americas at ZyXEL. “The G2210 series provides businesses and solution providers a wider selection of powerful and affordable switches with a range of features to match their exact needs.”†

The GS2210 Series boasts advanced L2 multicast and IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) snooping features to streamline bandwidth use for large IPTV, IP surveillance, and IP phone applications. In a hotel environment, for example, the MVR (Multicast VLAN Registration) function provides better network efficiency and security for hotel guests by allowing a single IPTV multicast VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) to be shared with all the set-top boxes while the subscribers remain in separate data VLANs.

With traffic-shaping capabilities combined with an array of access and traffic security features, the ZyXEL GS2210 Series can segment networks and allocate different bandwidth privileges to different users. These features make the switches useful for digital classroom applications where students and teachers use separate networks with different access rights. Advanced QoS (Quality of Service) and CoS (Class of Service) features can also reduce traffic congestion for latency-sensitive interactive learning applications.

The new switch series provides high-level network and access security by offering enhanced control and isolation. The defense mechanisms include IP source guard to prevent IP address spoofing from unknown IP addresses and man-in-the-middle attacks.

The PoE support in the ZyXEL GS2210 Series makes them an ideal candidate for applications like IP telephony, WLAN, and IP surveillance. In addition, the switches automatically detect the power consumption status of each powered device, and only supply the requisite amount of power needed, reducing energy consumption.

The 48-port GS2210 series Ethernet switches are available now through authorized ZyXEL partners. The 24-port GS2210 will be available in August. The series includes the following models:

  • GS2210-24 — 24 Port Gigabit Layer-2 Ethernet Switch, MSRP: $499
  • GS2210-24HP — 24 Port Gigabit Layer-2 Ethernet Switch with High Power PoE, MSRP: $799
  • GS2210-48 — 48 Port Gigabit Layer-2 Ethernet Switch, MSRP: $1099
  • GS2210-48HP — 48 Port Gigabit Layer-2 Ethernet Switch with High Power PoE, MSRP: $1349
