Webroot Releases Threat Investigation Tool

Part of the company’s BrightCloud threat intelligence family, the new system helps users research malicious IP addresses and URLs.

Next-generation security software maker Webroot Inc. has released BrightCloud Threat Investigator, a new addition to the Broomfield, Colorado-based company’s family of BrightCloud threat intelligence products designed to help IT professionals analyze security risks more easily and swiftly.

The new system, which integrates with Webroot’s BrightCloud Threat Intelligence for Next Generation Firewall and BrightCloud Threat Intelligence for Security Information and Event Management solutions, saves time and accelerates incident response processes by empowering users to drill into detailed information about individual malicious IP addresses and URLs showing which ones represent the greatest danger and why.

“Today’s enterprises are faced with such vast quantities of threat information, millions of log entries, and thousands of SIEM alerts, and that can be overwhelming,” said Mike Malloy, Webroot’s executive vice president of products and strategy, in a press statement. “The BrightCloud Threat Investigator provides a rich source of additional detail to help security analysts determine the right course of action, save precious time in the investigation and remediation process, and mitigate the costly effects of a breach.”

The new product reaches market just one day after Webroot’s annual Threat Brief report revealed that 100,000 new malicious IP addresses appeared on the Internet every day in 2015, up from 85,000 the year before, suggesting that hackers are utilizing a wider range of IP locations to avoid detection by conventional security defenses. Webroot’s cloud-hosted threat intelligence platform monitors a database of more than 4 billion IP addresses, including a list of roughly 12 million malicious ones that its machine learning technology updates every five minutes.

According to Webroot, malware writers are increasingly directing their attention towards SMBs these days, a trend that represents both a challenge and market opening for MSPs and solution providers. “These breaches are starting to be a concern now for the small guys as much as they are for the big guys,” said Tim Sheahan, Webroot’s North American channel sales manager, in an interview earlier this month with ChannelPro. “That gives an opportunity for service providers who specialize in protecting the smaller and medium enterprises.”
