NxTop 4 combines network-based storage with a stateless client-side hypervisor.

Desktop virtualization innovator Virtual Computer announced the availability of NxTop 4. The results of the release mean that SMBs can be sold a desktop virtualization solution that offers both centralized and distributed storage options for virtual machines while still having the ability to employ full computing power at the PC end-point.

Virtual Computer Upgrades NxTop

By combining network-based storage with a stateless client-side hypervisor, Virtual Computer’s customers can now keep all their data in the data center, but deliver a high-fidelity desktop experience at a fraction of the cost of server-hosted VDI.

The underpinning
s of this technology were first introduced to the market in 2009 by Lenovo, which is now working with Virtual Computer to extend the solution and deliver it on NxTop.

As part of the collaboration, Lenovo provided core technology and patents that bring this technology to a broad set of Lenovo computers and PCs powered by the second generation Intel Core vPro processors. †Lenovo customers can now benefit from NxTop’s native user experience and zero-touch PC deployment through a Lenovo custom factory install.

“Virtual Computer’s customers are moving forward with the confidence that Lenovo, Intel and other PC-ecosystem giants are supporting our approach,” says Virtual Computer CEO Dan McCall.

NxTop 4 includes the following new capabilities:

  • Hot-Desking on Stateless End-Points — Deployment option with local execution while data is hosted on a storage array.
  • VMware vSphere/ESXi and Citrix Xen Support — Production support for a broad set of server virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere/ESXi and Citrix Xen.
  • Server VMs on PC Infrastructure — Ability to centrally create, provision, and patch virtual Server 2008 instances on PC infrastructure.
  • Green Computing — Remote power management policies enable IT departments to control end-user laptop and desktop power usage from a central management interface.

NxTop 4 is available immediately via Virtual Computer’s global channel partners or through Lenovo customer factory install. ††
