Turning Defiance into Compliance with the ClickSafe Notebook Lock

Kensington creates its new ClickSafe computer lock to be simpler, safer, and smarter, thereby increasing the user compliance rate.

More than 600,000 notebook PCs are stolen each year, and 42 percent of data breaches are a result of those missing notebooks, says Kensington Security, which aims to prevent such breaches. The company also reports that while just less than 50 percent of businesses issue security locks, only 36 percent are used properly. The reason? Forty six percent of employees find laptop locks too difficult to use. Enter ClickSafe—Kensington’s latest notebook security device.

The ClickSafe lock was created as a “no excuses product” that is “simpler, safer, and smarter,” says Rob Humphrey, director of security for Kensington. The lock is safer, says Humphrey, because of the high-grade steel used in its construction. Its snap-in design is also simpler than previous Kensington products.†

Here’s how it works: The lock includes an anchor point that attaches to the notebook’s security slot, found on 99 percent of all laptops, in a “semi-permanent fashion.” The anchor, about the size of a mini USB, screws in with an Allen wrench and remains there as a solid fixture. The lock then easily snaps into the anchor. “It is smarter,” says Humphrey, “because with higher usage you get a lot fewer stolen laptops. [That] provides a very strong ROI.”

Kensington has created ClickSafe with the channel in mind, and plans to market directly to partners. Selling tools, sales guides, a security reference guide, and online tools and videos will be provided. Two versions of a training kit will also be offered, one each for inside and outside sales teams. Using these tools, Kensington plans to work with its partners to “turn defiance into compliance.”

“It is a very simple product…that is easy to deploy, and we view it as first line of defense,” says Humphrey. “It is a product that does not need patching or upgrades. It is very low maintenance. We believe ClickSafe will be used with a much higher frequency than in the past, which should drive increased adoption of the product and increase the catch rate volume for the reseller community.”

The ClickSafe lock carries a lifetime warranty and costs about $50, or $5 more than the company’s current product, the MicroSaver. A ClickSafeTwin Laptop Lock is also available for around $70. ClickSafe locks can be purchased through all major distributors. For more information, visit www.clickittokeepit.com.
