Nerdio Adds BDR Features for Azure Virtual Desktop to Nerdio Manager

The updates, which are new to both the enterprise and MSP editions of Manager, seek to keep session hosts continuously available even when regional Microsoft Azure outages.

Nerdio has added BDR features designed to keep Azure Virtual Desktop deployments continuously available to its two Nerdio Manager products.

The updates apply to both the original enterprise edition of Nerdio Manager, which seeks to help organizations with existing Microsoft Azure footprints accelerate Azure Virtual Desktop rollouts, and Nerdio Manager for MSP, the multitenant version of that product introduced this January.

“As usage of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) continues to grow, it has become a mission critical component in allowing continuous and safe access to corporate applications and data,” said Nerdio CEO Vadim Vladimirskiy in a press statement. “The new added powerful backup and disaster recovery capabilities in Nerdio Manager related to major areas of AVD operation, such as the management of desktop images and session hosts, improve the service’s resiliency, ensure business continuity and allow us to help IT teams when they need it most.”

Included among the new features is active/active host pool disaster recovery functionality, due to reach market in the first quarter of 2022, that will automatically deploy host virtual machines in two Microsoft Azure regions at login, allowing end users to remain productive even if one of those regions goes down.

A new desktop image backup feature also announced today allows organizations to create backup images of virtual desktops automatically and replicate them in multiple Azure regions. Integration with the Azure Compute Gallery service keeps multiple backups in sync.

New auto-healing capabilities automatically detect and repair broken session hosts, to keep unexpected corruption from denying access to virtual desktops and apps.

Finally, new support for FSLogix Cloud Cache, part of a suite of tools acquired by Microsoft in 2020, automatically saves multiple copies of AVD user profiles in multiple locations to ensure profiles remain available during regional outages.

Nerdio added support for Windows 365, the “cloud PC” service Microsoft introduced in July, to Manager for Enterprise and Manager for MSP the day after that product’s launch.

The accelerated embrace of work-from-anywhere IT strategies during the coronavirus pandemic has made virtual desktops more popular among businesses of all sizes. As a result, the desktop-as-a-service market grew 98% year over year in 2020 and is on track to grow another 68% in 2021, according to Gartner.
