HP Brings Premium Features to Mainstream Pavilion PCs

A new line of gaming and general-purpose PCs unveiled today seeks to bring specs and design touches normally found only in high-end, high-priced products within reach of the computer-buying masses.

HP Inc. has unveiled a wide array of affordably-priced additions to its Pavilion line of consumer PCs equipped with features typically found in premium models.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based hardware maker showcased the new offerings at its 2018 Americas region Executive Forum event, now taking place in Las Vegas. They’re part of a larger strategy on HP’s part to bring normally high-end specs and design touches within reach of the PC-buying masses.

“We’ve brought premium design into the mainstream,” said Kobi Elbaz, vice president and general manager of personal systems for HP’s Americas region in an interview with ChannelPro.

The new Pavilions fall broadly within two categories, general purpose and gaming. The general-purpose PCs include two convertibles, the Pavilion x360 14 and 15. Modeled after HP’s premium Envy x360 devices, the Pavilion SKUs feature a narrow-bezel design that accommodates 14- and 15-inch displays in 13- and 14-inch chasses. They also come in premium colors like silver, gold, and sapphire blue, and boast a chrome hinge, as well as both pen and touch functionality.

Processor options include 8th Gen Intel Core i5 and i7 chips in both dual and quad core configurations. Select 14-inch models come with an NVIDIA MX130 graphics card; select 15-inch models are equipped with AMD Radeon 530 graphics.

Prices begin at $499 for the 14-inch x360, which becomes available June 10th, and $579 for the 15-inch device, which ships on June 3rd.

HP’s lineup of 14- and 15-inch Pavilion Notebook PCs also come in eye-catching colors, including burgundy, pink, and ceramic white. Other premium features include a metal keyboard deck and cover, a touchpad with diamond cut trim, and a geometric speaker grill pattern. Borrowing from HP’s Envy product line, the new devices feature a “lift hinge” designed to improve typing comfort and airflow.

Both devices are 2mm thinner than their comparable predecessors, come with “micro-edge” bezels, and are powered by either 8th Gen Intel Core processors or an AMD Ryzen CPU with Radeon Vega graphics. Dual speakers tuned by Bang and Olufsen provide high-quality audio. The 14-inch model offers an optional fingerprint reader.

Both the 14-inch and 15-inch Pavilion Notebooks reach market on June 3rd. MSRPs start at $569 on the former product and $679 on the latter.

New desktop additions to the Pavilion family feature a compact case offering 10 percent depth reduction, as well as front panels with either an angular-cut bezel in brushed “Natural Silver” or a geometric-faceted bezel with vertical brushing in ash or natural silver. All Pavilion Desktops come with Surround Sound 5.1 and support for HP’s Audio Stream technology, which allows users to stream audio from their smartphone to their PC via Bluetooth.

Buyers can choose between 8th Gen Intel Core i+ processors and 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen processors with graphic options up to an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or a AMD Radeon RX 580. Pricing on the new devices runs $339.99 and up. Availability begins on May 13th.

HP’s new Pavilion Gaming PCs are the first SKUs in the Pavilion family specifically designed for gaming. Unlike PCs for gaming enthusiasts, however, they’re tailored to the needs of consumers who want a device they can use for both fun and work.

“Mainstream gamers are not all the time just gamers,” observes Elbaz.

The Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15, which features a 4K, 15.6-inch display, offers high-speed Wi-Fi and graphics options up to an AMD Radeon RX 560X or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 card. Models equipped with 8th Gen Intel Core i7+ H-series processors come with brushed aluminum keyboard decks and backlit keyboards in green, white, or ultraviolet. Models powered by 8th Gen Intel Core i7 U-series processors have plastic decks and optional back-lighting.

Units ship on May 27th at prices running $799 and up.

The new Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690 and 790 both come with a brushed “Shadow Black” finish and a green LED strip down the front. Surround Sound 5.1 and support for HP Audio Stream are both standard as well.

Priced at $549 and above, the 690 comes with up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and runs on up to six-core 8th Gen Intel Core i7+ processors or up to 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen processors, and GPUs ranging up to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or the AMD Radeon RX 580. The more powerful 790, which starts at $649, offers up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory and can accommodate an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 card in addition to the AMD Radeon RX 580. Both models become available this Sunday.

Also introduced today was a new 32-inch Pavilion Gaming display bearing VESA Certified Display HDR 600 technology and 600 nits peak brightness, as well as a 6,000:1 contrast ratio and 2560×1440 Quad HD resolution. Built-in Radeon FreeSync technology reduces stuttering and tearing during gameplay by synchronizing the GPU and display. Available on May 11th, the new product’s starting price is $449.

HP’s newest PCs arrive at a time of torrid growth for its personal systems business. Personal systems revenue in the Americas grew 30.6 percent, in fact, during the 2017 fiscal year. Revenue rose 11 percent during that period, and an even faster 15 percent yeayr-over-year during the first quarter of fiscal 2018.

Also at the 2018 Executive Forum this week, HP announced new print management integrations with Microsoft and McAfee as well as the first products in its line of PageWide inkjet printers with external finishing options.
