Home Networking and the Digital Home: Rising Opportunities for the Channel

With more U.S. households expected to invest in home networks and the digital home through 2015, IT service providers focused on SMBs may want to consider the consumer segment.

With more U.S. households expected to invest in home networks and the digital home through 2015, IT service providers focused on SMBs may want to consider the consumer segment.

According to market research firm Parks Associates, over 20 percent of U.S. households will have a home network with IP-based security, monitoring, home control, and energy management by 2015. Many channel pros have considered entering the home networking or digital home market, but are worried about the reliability of business opportunities there. With a high projected number of home appliances relying on networks over the next three years, this is the steady stream of business that IT service providers are looking for.

Beyond home control, the digital home includes the entertainment systems in our home theaters. With smart TVs beginning to emerge in the market, the standard television is going to become extinct. Smart TVs can turn a living room into a conference room, and replace monitors dependent on PC controllers. By adding these TVs and relevant add-ons to your portfolio, you can become a one-stop shop for your customer’s home IT needs.

“Even if you’re focused on business or other segments until now, digital home presents a compelling reason to consider the consumer segment, with opportunities for increased sales of high-margin products and services,” says Intel’s Digital Home Opportunity program.
